Business class fares to Europe move a lot. The same seat on the same flight can price very differently depending on the month you travel, the day you leave, how far ahead you book and which US airport you fly from. None of these factors is a secret, but most travelers only get one or two of them right.

Here is how the timing works, and how to stack it in your favor.

## The short version

- **Travel in shoulder season.** April, May, September and October usually price better than June through August.
- **Fly Monday through Thursday.** Weekend departures and returns often cost more.
- **Book two to six months out,** earlier for summer and holidays.
- **Fly from the East Coast if you can.** Transatlantic fares are usually lowest from East Coast gateways.
- **Watch the return leg from London.** UK departure taxes on premium cabins are high.

## When is business class to Europe cheapest?

### Peak: June through August, and the holidays

Summer is when leisure travelers who buy premium seats fly to Europe, and the demand shows up in the fares. Christmas and New Year are similar, with families heading over to visit or ski. Discounted business class seats sell out first in these periods.

### Shoulder: April and May, September and October

For many travelers this is the sweet spot. The weather across much of Europe is good, the crowds are thinner, and business class fares and availability are often better than in summer. Watch for local events that push prices up: Easter week, major trade fairs, Oktoberfest in Munich and the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris.

### Low: November through March, outside the holidays

Leisure demand is at its lowest. Business class fares do not fall as much as economy fares, because corporate travelers keep flying, but airlines often run business class promotions for winter travel. If you can travel in January, February or early March, it is worth asking.

## How far ahead should you book?

There is no perfect day to buy, but there are sensible windows:

- **Peak summer and holiday trips:** start looking four to six months out. The lowest business class fare levels on popular dates sell first.
- **Shoulder season:** two to four months out is usually enough.
- **Winter trips:** one to three months out often works, and promotions can appear closer in.
- **The last two or three weeks:** fares tend to rise. Airlines hold seats for travelers who have to fly and will pay for it.

Booking very early, ten or eleven months ahead, rarely gets you the best price either. Airlines often load sale fares later, once they can see how a flight is selling.

### A sample timeline

Say you want to spend late September in Italy. Start pricing in April or May, while the shoulder-season fare levels are still open. If your dates are flexible by a few days, give your agent the range rather than fixed dates. Aim to book by early summer, before the September flights start to fill.

## Which days are cheapest to fly?

Many transatlantic fares cost more for weekend travel. Corporate travelers fly out on Sunday night or Monday and come home Thursday or Friday, while leisure travelers crowd the weekends. Departing and returning Monday through Thursday, and Tuesday or Wednesday in particular, often prices better.

The return date matters as much as the departure date. A Sunday return after a week in Europe is convenient, but moving it to Monday or Tuesday can change the fare.

## Which US airports price better?

### East Coast gateways

New York (JFK and Newark), Boston, Washington Dulles and Philadelphia have the shortest flights to Europe, the most nonstops and the most competition. Transatlantic business class fares are usually lowest from the East Coast.

### Big inland hubs

Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Detroit and Charlotte all have nonstops to major European cities on US and European airlines. Competition on these routes keeps fares reasonable, especially to London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

### The West Coast

Flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle are longer, and fewer airlines fly each route, so fares are often higher. A one-stop itinerary through an East Coast or European hub, booked on a single ticket, can price close to the nonstop and is worth comparing.

If you plan to fly to an East Coast gateway on a separate ticket, leave a generous buffer. If the first flight is late, the second airline has no obligation to rebook you.

## Does your destination change the fare?

### London and the UK departure tax

The UK charges a much higher Air Passenger Duty on premium-cabin departures than on economy, and it applies to your flight home. An open-jaw ticket, flying into [London](https://buybusinessclass.com/business-class-flights/london) and home from [Paris](https://buybusinessclass.com/business-class-flights/paris) or Amsterdam, can reduce the taxes on your ticket. Dublin is another option for the return: travelers flying home from Dublin can clear US immigration there before departure.

Book the UK paperwork early too: visitors from the USA usually need a UK electronic travel authorisation (ETA), applied for online before you travel.

### Big hubs vs smaller cities

London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam have the most nonstops from the US, which brings more competition. A smaller city may need a connection, but fares into an alternative city nearby, or a one-stop routing through a good hub, can be lower than the obvious choice.
