## Guide: New York to Madrid

New York to Madrid is about 7 hours eastbound and 8.5 hours westbound. Iberia flies nonstop from JFK to Madrid-Barajas, United flies from Newark, and other airlines add more departures. Flights leave in the evening and arrive in Madrid early the next morning. Madrid is Iberia's hub, with easy connections to Seville, Malaga, Valencia and Lisbon, and Iberia and American Airlines sell each other's flights. Summer and the December holidays are the busiest periods, while late fall and winter are usually easier.

### Which airport: JFK or Newark, and which Madrid terminal

In New York, the airport follows the airline. Iberia and American fly from JFK Terminal 8, which they share with British Airways, and Delta flies from JFK Terminal 4. Air Europa also flies from JFK, and schedule data list it at Terminal 4; confirm the terminal on your booking. United flies from Newark, where Iberia also ran a seasonal flight in summer 2026 that published schedules end on 23 October.

### Read the full guide

Every flight lands at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Spain's busiest airport, about 13 km (8 miles) northeast of Puerta del Sol. Aena, the airport operator, lists Iberia and American at T4, United and Delta at T1, and Air Europa at T1 and T2.

Iberia and American schedule their New York flights at T4S, a satellite about 2 km from the main T4 building. An underground driverless train is the only link between them, so on the way home allow time for the train and for passport control. A free shuttle bus links T1, T2 and T4 around the clock.

### Nonstop or one stop: five airlines fly it nonstop

Published schedules for October 2026 show five airlines flying the route nonstop. Iberia, whose hub is Madrid, flies twice daily from JFK. From 25 October 2026 schedules list one flight on a single-aisle Airbus A321neo-family aircraft, the type Iberia flies across the Atlantic as the A321XLR, with 14 business seats in a 1-1 herringbone layout without doors, and the other on an Airbus A330; in summer the larger A350-900 flies much of the schedule. Iberia's long-haul Business is lie-flat. United flies Newark to Madrid daily as UA51 on a Boeing 767-400 with United Polaris, which gives every passenger aisle access on widebodies.

American flies JFK daily as AA94 on a Boeing 777-200 with Flagship Business, and Iberia sells the same flight under its own number, so the partners can be combined on one ticket. Delta flies JFK daily as DL126 with Delta One, a flat bed, on a Boeing 767-400 in winter and an Airbus A330-300 in summer 2026; its suites with full-height doors are on most A350 and A330-900 flights, types not scheduled here. Air Europa flies a Boeing 787 from JFK five days a week in winter, with a second flight on some summer days.

With this many nonstops, a connection makes sense mainly when you are going beyond Madrid: Iberia flies from T4 to cities such as Bilbao, A Coruña and Alicante on the same ticket. Read the fare rules too. Delta assigns Basic Business seats only after check-in, and from 19 January 2027 that fare drops Delta One Lounge access and Delta One check-in.

### Overnight or daytime: overnight out, daytime home

Eastbound is an overnight flight. Schedules for late October 2026 leave New York between about 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. and reach Madrid between about 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Summer adds departures from about 4 p.m. and Air Europa's second flight after midnight. Scheduled times run about 6 hours 50 minutes to 7 hours 40 minutes, so the night is short.

The choice is between an early landing and a later one. Iberia's late-afternoon JFK flight lands around 6 a.m., hours before most hotel check-ins, while the evening departures on Iberia, American, United and Air Europa arrive mostly between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. It is still the middle of the night in New York when you land, so plan an easy first day.

Coming home is a daytime flight. Winter departures leave Madrid from 9 a.m. on Delta to mid-afternoon on Air Europa and reach New York the same afternoon or early evening, after about 8 hours 15 minutes to 9 hours 15 minutes; Iberia's single-aisle flight is the longest. On a daytime return, space to work and a proper meal matter more than the bed.

### When to go and what moves the fare

Summer has the most seats: Iberia puts more of its larger A350s on the route, Air Europa adds flights, and Iberia's Newark service ran only in summer. Demand rises faster still, so June to August is usually the busiest and highest period, along with Christmas and New Year. Spanish holidays add pressure: Holy Week, 1 May and Madrid's regional holiday on 2 May, and the long weekend around Constitution Day on 6 December and the Immaculate Conception on 8 December.

Madrid is one of the driest capitals in Europe, and July averages daily highs near 33°C (91°F), so the hottest weeks match the busiest flights. Spring and early fall are milder; October, the wettest month, has only about seven days of rain. Late October to mid-December, outside the holiday weekends, and January to March are usually quieter and lower, and four of the five airlines still fly daily in winter.

Business fares tend to climb as the cabin fills, so book summer and holiday dates early. A midweek departure, or one that avoids the start of Holy Week, can price very differently, and asking for both JFK and Newark widens the options.

### Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026

Spain is in the Schengen area, and the United States is on the EU list of countries whose citizens need no visa for short stays. As of October 2026, US passport holders can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. EU guidance says your passport should be valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the EU and issued within the last 10 years. Check before you fly.

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamping. On your first entry, officers record your passport data, fingerprints and a facial image, and the system logs each entry and exit after that, so the first arrival may take a little longer.

ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorization for visa-free visitors, is not in operation. The European Commission's page, dated 6 October 2025, says no applications are collected and that the start date will be announced several months before launch, so any site taking ETIAS applications now is not the official system.

### Baggage, lounges and the ground in Madrid

The checked bag allowance comes from the airline operating your flight, so check what your ticket shows. Delta, for example, allows bags up to 70 lb (32 kg) each in Delta One and accepts no bag over 70 lb between the Americas and Europe.

At JFK Terminal 8, the Greenwich Lounge, shared by American and British Airways, works as American's Flagship Lounge and is generally open to same-day oneworld business class passengers, Iberia's included. Delta's Delta One Lounge sits between Concourses A and B in Terminal 4. United's Newark Polaris lounge is in Terminal C, between gates C102 and C120, and access depends on your fare. Flying home, Iberia business class passengers use its non-Schengen lounge, the Velázquez, in T4S. At T1, Aena runs the Cibeles VIP lounge; your airline confirms which lounge you can use.

Metro Line 8 runs from T2, which serves T1 to T3, and from T4 to Nuevos Ministerios, 6:05 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. The C1 commuter train from T4 reaches Chamartín and Atocha, the high-speed rail stations, and Aena says it is free with an AVE ticket connecting with a flight. The Airport Express bus, line 203, runs 24 hours to Atocha. Official taxis are white with a red stripe and charge a flat fare, day or night, to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road.

### Booking tips

- Iberia and American Airlines are partners, so their New York flights can be mixed on one ticket.
- Madrid's Terminal 4 has a separate satellite building, T4S, linked by an underground train; allow extra time for connections.
- For Barcelona, Seville or Valencia, the high-speed train from Madrid is often as quick as a connecting flight once you count airport time.

    > Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

## New York to Madrid: questions

### How much is business class from New York to Madrid?

As of November 2026, business class from New York to Madrid is estimated from $2,041 per person, round trip. That is an estimate for the route, not an airline quote: fares change daily with dates, airline and seat availability, and your agent confirms yours before you pay.

### Is it safe to book business class to Madrid with BuyBusinessClass?

Yes. BuyBusinessClass is an IATA-accredited agency (14531683), holds TRUE code 99910753, is a BBB Accredited Business and is rated 4.8 on Trustpilot from 1,687 reviews. Your ticket is issued by the airline in your name, and you can check the booking on the airline's website before you fly.

### How long is the flight from New York to Madrid?

About 7 hours eastbound and about 8.5 hours westbound nonstop.

### Which airlines fly nonstop from New York to Madrid?

Iberia flies from JFK and United from Newark. Other airlines add flights, and your agent can list the current options by phone, form or WhatsApp.

### Is Madrid a good hub for the rest of Spain?

Yes. Iberia connects through Madrid to most Spanish cities, and high-speed trains reach Seville, Barcelona and Valencia in about two to three hours.

### Should I fly from JFK or Newark?

Choose the airline first, since it sets the airport. JFK has four of the five airlines and Newark has United daily. Newark is often closer from New Jersey and western Manhattan.

### Which terminal will I use in Madrid?

Iberia and American use T4 and its T4S satellite, United and Delta use T1, and Aena lists Air Europa at T1 and T2.

### Can I sleep on the flight to Madrid?

Yes, but the night is short at about seven hours. The later departures land mid-morning, which suits a hotel check-in better than a 6 a.m. arrival.

### More questions (3)

### Do US citizens need a visa or ETIAS for Spain?

As of October 2026, no visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days in 180, and ETIAS is not yet in operation. The Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo at first entry. Check before you fly.

### When is New York to Madrid quietest?

Usually late October to mid-December, outside the early December long weekend, and January to March. Summer, Holy Week and Christmas are busiest.

### How do I get from Madrid-Barajas to the city center?

Take Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, the C1 train from T4 to Atocha or Chamartín, the 24-hour Airport Express bus, or a flat-fare taxi to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road.
