## Guide: New York to Rome

New York to Rome takes about 8.5 to 9 hours eastbound and around 10 hours westbound. ITA Airways and Delta fly nonstop from JFK to Fiumicino, United flies from Newark, and more flights are added in summer. Departures leave in the late afternoon or evening and land in Rome the next morning. Fiumicino is Rome's long-haul airport, about 30 minutes from the center by the Leonardo Express train. Business class demand peaks from late spring through early fall, when Italy is busiest.

### Which airport: JFK or Newark, and always Fiumicino

Every nonstop from New York to Rome lands at Fiumicino, also called Leonardo da Vinci (FCO). It is Italy's busiest airport and the main hub of ITA Airways, about 30 km (19 miles) from the city. Rome's second airport, Ciampino, is closer to the center but handles low-cost and European flights, with no transatlantic service.

### Read the full guide

In New York, the airport follows the airline. Delta flies from JFK Terminal 4 and ITA Airways also uses JFK, while United flies from Newark. American, which adds a seasonal summer flight, uses JFK Terminal 8. JFK terminal assignments can change, so confirm yours on the booking. Newark is often easier from New Jersey and the west side of Manhattan, JFK from Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

In Rome, long-haul flights outside the Schengen area use Terminal 3 and its E gates. Gates E31 to E44 sit in a satellite building reached by the SkyBridge people mover, so on the way home allow time to get there after passport control.

### Nonstop or one stop: three airlines, two airports

Three airlines fly the route nonstop through the year. ITA Airways flies from JFK, mostly twice a day in the 2025-26 winter and three times a day in summer 2026, on Airbus A330-900 and A350-900 aircraft. Delta's published schedules show two daily JFK flights in winter and summer. United flies twice a day from Newark in the 2026-27 winter schedule (UA40, which also ran in January 2026, and UA510). American's JFK flight is seasonal: it flew daily on a Boeing 787-9 in summer 2026 and its listed schedule ends on 23 October, so check whether it runs on your dates.

The cabins differ by airline and aircraft. ITA Airways sells Business Class, with lie-flat seats and direct aisle access on its long-haul Airbus A350 and A330neo aircraft. Delta One on this route used the Airbus A330-300 in summer 2026, and the published schedule from 24 October 2026 moves both daily flights to the A330-900neo, the type on which Delta says most flights have suites with full-height doors. United sells Polaris, its lie-flat business class. An agent can check the aircraft for your date.

With three nonstop airlines, a one-stop trip rarely makes sense, but it has two uses: an ITA Airways connection at Fiumicino keeps an onward Italian flight on one ticket, and when the nonstops are full in peak summer, connecting through another European hub adds a few hours but can open up business class seats.

### Overnight out, daytime home

Eastbound, this is an overnight flight. In Delta's 2026 schedules its two JFK departures leave between about 4:45 pm and 7:30 pm and reach Rome between about 6 am and 10 am the next day. With roughly eight and a half hours in the air and dinner served first, the realistic sleep window is five or six hours, so eating in the lounge and skipping the full meal buys more rest.

Westbound is a daytime flight. Delta's Rome departures leave between about 8:30 am and 12:15 pm and land at JFK in the early to mid afternoon the same day, after about 10 hours in the air, longer than the trip out. Staying awake most of the way and going to bed at a normal New York hour resets the body clock fastest.

Morning arrivals have one catch: a Rome hotel room may not be ready until the afternoon. Booking the room from the night before, or asking for early check-in, turns the arrival into a shower and a nap instead of a wait in the lobby.

### When to go and what moves the fare

Demand peaks from late spring to early fall: Aeroporti di Roma reported more than 15 million Fiumicino passengers from June to August 2026. Business cabins on the summer nonstops tend to fill first and fares are usually highest for June to August departures, so book those months early. July and August are also hot, with average highs around 31°C (88°F).

Holidays move fares too. Italy's national holidays, including Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June and 15 August (Ferragosto), often become long weekends when Italians take a bridging day, called a ponte. Christmas and New Year tend to be busy in both directions.

The quieter, lower-fare months are usually November to March outside the holidays. November is Rome's wettest month and January highs are around 12°C (54°F). Europe's clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, when airlines switch to winter timetables and seasonal flights such as American's stop. April, May, September and October often give the best balance of weather and availability.

### Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026

Italy is part of the Schengen area. As of October 2026, US passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries together. Under EU rules your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and stay valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area. Rules change, so check before you fly.

The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) now applies at Fiumicino. It began a phased start on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps with a digital record that includes your fingerprints and a facial image. Expect to register at passport control on your first entry, which may add time to the arrival line. If you connect onward to another Italian or Schengen city, you clear this check in Rome.

ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors, is not required yet. The European Commission's ETIAS page says the system is not in operation, no applications are being collected, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. Treat any website asking you to pay for an ETIAS today with suspicion, and recheck the official page before trips planned for 2027.

### Baggage, lounges and the ground in Rome

ITA Airways lists two checked bags of up to 32 kg each for long-haul Business Class, plus two 8 kg carry-on bags and a personal item. Delta does not accept checked bags over 70 lb (31.75 kg) on flights between the Americas and Europe. Free bag counts on Delta and United can depend on the fare type, so confirm the allowance on your ticket.

Lounges depend on the fare as well as the cabin. The Delta One Lounge at JFK Terminal 4 sits between Concourses A and B, but Delta says Basic Business tickets will not include it for travel from 19 January 2027. United's Newark Polaris lounge is in Terminal C, and basic Polaris fares get United Club access instead. In Rome, the ITA Airways Piazza di Spagna lounge at gates E11 to E24 serves departures outside Schengen and lists ITA Airways, Delta and several partners among the airlines whose business passengers use it.

Getting into the city is simple. The Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, from about 5:38 am to 11:27 pm; you can tap a contactless card at the gate, and Metrebus city tickets are not valid on it. Licensed taxis are white with a roof sign and license number, wait at the arrivals level of Terminals 1 and 3, and charge a fixed fare to the center inside the Aurelian Walls.

### Booking tips

- Book summer trips early: May to September fills fastest, while November to March is usually easier.
- The Leonardo Express runs nonstop from Fiumicino to Roma Termini in about 32 minutes; a car is easier with heavy luggage.
- Going on to Sicily, Puglia or Sardinia? An ITA Airways connection at Fiumicino keeps the whole trip on one ticket.

    > Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
