## Guide: New York to Tokyo

New York to Tokyo is one of the longer business class trips from the East Coast, about 14 hours westbound and around 13 hours eastbound. ANA and Japan Airlines fly nonstop from JFK, and United flies from Newark, with service into Haneda and Narita. The route crosses the International Date Line, so you arrive a calendar day later. With 14 hours in the air you can sleep a full night and still have time to eat twice and get some work done.

### Which airport to use in New York and in Tokyo

In New York, the airline decides the airport. ANA flies from JFK Terminal 7, and Japan Airlines from JFK Terminal 8, which it shares with American Airlines and British Airways. United flies from Newark Terminal C. New Jersey travelers often find Newark the shorter ride.

### Read the full guide

In Tokyo the choice matters more. Haneda lists about 15 minutes to Shinagawa, 20 to Hamamatsucho and 30 to Tokyo Station by the Keikyu Line or the Tokyo Monorail. Narita is farther out: the Keisei Skyliner reaches Keisei Ueno in as little as 41 minutes, and the Narita Express runs to Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Yokohama. When flight times are similar, Haneda saves time at both ends of the trip.

This winter the choice is mostly made for you. ANA has suspended its Narita to New York flights from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, and published schedules show both Japan Airlines flights going to Haneda, so United's Newark flight is the only Narita nonstop. Connecting from Narita to a Haneda domestic flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes by train.

### Nonstop or one stop on this route

Three airlines fly the route nonstop. ANA's winter timetable, updated 20 August 2026, shows two daily flights each way between JFK and Haneda, NH159 and NH109 outbound, both scheduled with the Boeing 777-300ER. Japan Airlines also flies twice daily from JFK to Haneda, as JL3 and JL5, on the Airbus A350-1000. United flies daily from Newark to Haneda as UA131 and to Narita as UA79, both on the Boeing 787-9 from late October. Aircraft can change, so check before you book.

Scheduled times run about 14 and a half hours westbound and 12 and a half to 13 hours back to New York. On ANA, the business suite called The Room, with a door and direct aisle access, is fitted to its newer-layout 777-300ERs, so check the seat map for your flight. United sells its long-haul business cabin as United Polaris.

A one-stop trip rarely saves time, but it helps when the nonstops are full or you are going beyond Tokyo. ANA also flies daily to Haneda from Chicago, Washington, Houston and Seattle, so a connection there keeps you on ANA. For onward travel to Southeast Asia, a Tokyo connection on ANA or Japan Airlines keeps the whole trip on one ticket.

### Overnight or daytime: picking your departure

From JFK, both Japanese airlines offer the same two choices. The late-night flights, JL3 and NH159, leave between 1:35 and 1:50 a.m. and reach Haneda a little after 5 a.m. Because they leave after midnight, a flight you think of as Monday night is dated Tuesday, and you land early on Wednesday, Tokyo time. Sleep soon after takeoff, and book your hotel from the night before so the room is ready.

The afternoon flights, JL5 and NH109, leave JFK around 2 p.m. and land at about 5:15 and 5:40 p.m. the next day. Stay awake for the first meal, sleep through the middle of the flight, then go to bed at a normal Tokyo hour. United's Newark flights leave late morning or around noon and land mid-afternoon.

Coming home, you land in New York on the same calendar day. JL6 and NH110 leave Haneda late in the morning and reach JFK around 11 a.m., a daytime flight for work and a nap. JL4 and the United flights leave in the evening and land between about 5 and 7:30 p.m.; NH160 leaves just before 11 p.m., the one true overnight flight home. Japan stays on UTC+9 all year with no daylight saving time, so Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York in summer and 14 in winter.

### When to go and what moves the fare

Japan's own calendar drives demand on this route. JNTO, the national tourism organization, notes that cherry blossom season is under way by late March and that Golden Week, a run of holidays when much of the country travels, starts at the end of April. Many people in Japan also take holidays in late September.

Around the New Year, families return to their hometowns and many restaurants and attractions close for the holiday, so plan around it. Summers are hot and humid, and winters call for a warm coat. Autumn is a favorite season: humidity drops, and the leaves turn from mid-November to early December.

Fares follow those peaks. Expect higher fares and fewer business class seats around cherry blossom season, Golden Week and the New Year, and book those dates early. Outside the peaks, flexible dates and midweek departures usually give more choice of flights and seats.

### Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US citizens do not need a visa for short visits to Japan. The US Embassy in Tokyo says tourists with US passports can visit for up to three months without one, and JNTO describes the exemption as stays of 90 days or less for tourism, with no paid work. If your trip is for business, ask the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate whether your activities qualify. Rules can change at short notice, so check before you fly.

Neither page lists an online pre-travel authorization for US visitors as of October 2026. Visit Japan Web, the government's online registration for arrival procedures, is optional, though JNTO says registering ahead makes steps such as tax-free shopping easier. Keep your passport valid for your whole stay and carry it at all times, which the embassy notes is a legal requirement.

Medication is where US travelers get caught. The embassy warns that many common US prescription and over-the-counter drugs are illegal in Japan, even with a valid US prescription. Check the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare guidance before you pack, apply for an import certificate (Yunyu Kakunin-sho) if you carry more than the allowed quantity, which can take several weeks, and bring a copy of your prescription with a doctor's letter. The State Department rates Japan at Level 1, exercise normal precautions.

### Baggage, lounges and the ground in Tokyo

Baggage rules depend on the airline and the fare. ANA allows business class passengers checked bags of up to 32 kg (70 lb) each, up to 158 cm (62 in) in total dimensions, and says one or two free pieces apply depending on the fare rules. Japan Airlines and United set their own allowances, and a partner airline's rules may apply on a connecting ticket.

At Newark, the United Polaris Lounge in Terminal C is designed for long-haul international business class passengers. At JFK Terminal 7, the airport lists an Aer Lingus lounge and the shared Horizons T7 Lounge, and ANA says its business passengers use ANA or ANA-affiliated lounges, so confirm yours at check-in. In Tokyo, ANA runs an ANA LOUNGE at both Haneda and Narita, plus an arrival lounge at Narita for business passengers.

On arrival, Japan Customs offers electronic declaration gates, and Haneda has currency exchange and ATMs, Wi-Fi and SIM rental counters, and baggage delivery services. Taxis wait at marked stands, with a separate stand for app or pre-booked cars. From Narita, take the Skyliner toward Ueno and Asakusa, or the Narita Express toward Tokyo Station, Shibuya and Shinjuku.

### Booking tips

- Haneda is far closer to central Tokyo than Narita; when times are similar, choose Haneda.
- Continuing to Southeast Asia? Tokyo connections on ANA or Japan Airlines work well and keep you on one ticket.
- Golden Week (late April to early May) and the New Year holidays are peak travel times in Japan; book early.

    > Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

## New York to Tokyo: questions

### How much is business class from New York to Tokyo?

As of November 2026, business class from New York to Tokyo is estimated from $2,354 per person, round trip. That is an estimate for the route, not an airline quote: fares change daily with dates, airline and seat availability, and your agent confirms yours before you pay.

### Is it safe to book business class to Tokyo with BuyBusinessClass?

Yes. BuyBusinessClass is an IATA-accredited agency (14531683), holds TRUE code 99910753, is a BBB Accredited Business and is rated 4.8 on Trustpilot from 1,687 reviews. Your ticket is issued by the airline in your name, and you can check the booking on the airline's website before you fly.

### How long is the flight from New York to Tokyo?

About 14 hours westbound and about 13 hours eastbound nonstop.

### Which airlines fly nonstop from New York to Tokyo?

ANA and Japan Airlines fly from JFK, and United flies from Newark.

### What day will I arrive in Tokyo?

You cross the International Date Line, so you land the day after you depart, Tokyo time. On the way home you land in New York on the same calendar day you left.

### Is there a nonstop from New York to Narita this winter?

Only United's Newark flight. ANA has suspended its Narita to New York service from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, and Japan Airlines' JFK flights are scheduled into Haneda.

### Haneda or Narita: which is better for central Tokyo?

Haneda, for most hotels: about 15 minutes to Shinagawa and 30 to Tokyo Station by train or monorail. Narita suits stays near Ueno or Asakusa, on the Skyliner line.

### Should I take the late-night or the afternoon flight from JFK?

The late-night flights land a little after 5 a.m., giving you a full first day if you sleep on board. The afternoon flights land around 5:15 to 5:40 p.m., a few hours before a normal Tokyo bedtime.

### More questions (4)

### What day will I land if I leave JFK late at night?

The late-night flights leave after midnight, so a Monday-night departure is dated Tuesday and lands early Wednesday in Tokyo. Flights home land the same calendar day.

### Do US citizens need a visa for Japan?

Not for short visits, as of October 2026: the US Embassy in Tokyo says US tourists can stay up to three months without one. Paid work needs a visa; check before you fly.

### Can I bring my prescription medicine to Japan?

Check first: some common US medicines are illegal in Japan even with a prescription. Read the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare guidance and carry a copy of your prescription.

### When is the busiest time to fly to Tokyo?

Cherry blossom season from late March, Golden Week starting at the end of April, and the New Year holidays. Book those dates early and expect fewer business class seats.
