## Direct aisle access, explained

Cabins with direct aisle access arrange their seats, often in a 1-2-1 pattern across the plane, so every seat reaches the aisle without stepping over anyone.

Older layouts such as 2-2-2 put window passengers next to an aisle passenger who must move when they get up. On a night flight that matters.

Seat maps show the layout before you book.

Airlines reach it with staggered or herringbone layouts: seats offset or angled so each one opens onto the aisle. In a 1-2-1 cabin the window seats suit people traveling alone and the center pairs suit couples, though some center seats are set apart from each other.

### On a business class trip

A traveler flying alone to Tokyo who wants to sleep undisturbed looks for a 1-2-1 cabin, where the window seat has its own way to the aisle.
