Guide: New York to Tel Aviv

New York to Tel Aviv is about 10 to 11 hours eastbound and around 12 hours westbound. El Al flies nonstop from JFK and Newark to Ben Gurion Airport. US airlines have also flown the route, but their service has been suspended and resumed several times since 2023, so confirm the current nonstop options before you book. One-stop routes through Europe add flexibility when nonstops are full. Expect detailed security questioning at Ben Gurion before your flight home.

Which airport: JFK or Newark

Both New York gateways have nonstop service to Ben Gurion Airport (TLV), which has its own railway station with trains to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The airline you prefer mostly decides the New York airport: in October 2026 schedules, Delta flies from Terminal 4 at JFK, United from Terminal C at Newark, and El Al from both, using Terminal 4 at JFK and Terminal B at Newark.

Read the full guideHide the full guide

If you are open on the airline, start from home. Newark is usually the easier ride from New Jersey and the west side of Manhattan, while JFK suits Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Connecting from another US city, book one ticket through the matching hub, Delta through JFK or United through Newark, so your bags go through and a late first flight is the airline's problem. In Israel there is nothing to choose: these New York flights use Terminal 3 at Ben Gurion.

Nonstop or one stop in October 2026

As of mid-October 2026, five airlines fly the route nonstop. El Al runs several daily flights from JFK and Newark on Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft; its summer 2026 filing listed 23 weekly JFK flights and up to 13 weekly Newark flights. Delta restarted its daily JFK nonstop on September 6, 2026, on an Airbus A330-900neo with Delta One. United returned to Newark on September 8 with two daily Boeing 787-10 flights offering Polaris, and JNS reported a third, four times a week, from November. Smaller Israeli airlines Arkia and Israir also fly from JFK a few times weekly on Airbus A330s; ask about their business seats.

Treat any schedule here as provisional. United paused Tel Aviv when the Iran war began at the end of February 2026, both US carriers sat out the summer, and American Airlines, absent since October 2023, has suspended its New York route through March 27, 2027. The State Department warns that regional tensions can cause airlines to cancel or limit flights, so a changeable fare is worth more here than on most routes.

One stop through Europe is the fallback when the nonstops are full or paused. In October 2026 Lufthansa flew Frankfurt to Tel Aviv and Swiss flew Zurich to Tel Aviv, and British Airways planned a daily London flight from October 25. A connection takes longer but spreads the risk across two airlines.

Overnight or daytime: how the timings work

Eastbound, every nonstop is an overnight flight of about 10 hours 20 minutes to 10 hours 45 minutes. In mid-October 2026 schedules, with Israel seven hours ahead of New York, the afternoon departures (El Al from Newark around 1:30 pm, United around 3:25 pm, Delta around 3:40 pm) land between about 7 and 9:30 the next morning, and El Al's JFK flight at around 11:50 pm lands at about 5 pm.

Westbound you pick a day or a night flight. Delta and United leave Tel Aviv around 11 to 11:35 am and land in New York the same afternoon after about 12 hours. El Al's night flight leaves around 1 am and United's around 11:25 pm, and both land before 6 am. The day flight is gentler: you stay awake, eat twice and sleep at home. The night flight buys an extra day in Israel at the cost of a dawn arrival.

El Al does not schedule flights over Shabbat, from Friday evening to Saturday night, a rule kept since 1982 except for emergency flights in October 2023, so it has no Friday-night departures from New York and nothing from Tel Aviv on Saturday until after dark. Delta and United fly through the weekend, which matters if you must travel on a Friday.

When to go and what moves the fare

The Jewish calendar moves demand more than the weather does. Hanukkah (December 4 to 12, 2026), Passover (from the evening of April 21, 2027) and the autumn holidays (Rosh Hashanah from the evening of October 1, 2027, through Shmini Atzeret on October 23) draw heavy family travel, and nonstop seats go early. If your dates touch these weeks, book well ahead and expect higher fares.

Quieter weeks tend to fall from late October into early December and from January to early March, outside the year-end break. Israel's tourism ministry describes a long summer from April to October, hottest and most humid in July and August, and a cooler, wetter season from November to March.

Competition and security news move fares as much as the season. When Delta and United returned in September 2026, travel agents told JNS they expected fares to ease mainly after the autumn holidays, while a fresh suspension tends to remove seats and push prices higher on the airlines still flying.

Entry rules for US passport holders

As of October 2026, US citizens need no visa for a visit of up to 90 days but must hold an approved ETA-IL, Israel's electronic travel authorization, before flying; Israel's embassies date the requirement to January 1, 2025. Apply only at israel-entry.piba.gov.il, at least 72 hours ahead. A small fee applies, and approval lasts up to two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first; a new passport needs a new application.

Israel's Ministry of Tourism, citing the Population and Immigration Authority, says visa-exempt travelers need a passport valid for at least three months beyond the arrival date. Passports are not stamped: an arrival kiosk prints an electronic gate pass that you should keep with you. An approved ETA-IL does not by itself entitle you to enter; the border officer decides.

The State Department reissued its Level 3 Reconsider Travel advisory for Israel on August 26, 2026, with Do Not Travel areas near the Gaza Strip, along the Egyptian border and in parts of the far north, and the US Embassy in Jerusalem suggests enrolling in STEP for alerts. Rules change quickly here, so check the official sites again in the week before you fly.

Baggage, lounges and the ground at Ben Gurion

Business fares include more checked baggage than economy, but the number of bags and the weight limit depend on the airline and fare; Delta allows 70 pounds per bag in Delta One against 50 in its other cabins. Some airlines now sell stripped-back business fares: Delta says Basic Business passengers lose Delta One Lounge access for travel from January 19, 2027, so confirm what your fare includes.

At JFK, the Delta One Lounge sits in Terminal 4 between Concourses A and B, beside the main security checkpoint, for passengers with a same-day Delta One ticket. El Al and United lounge access depends on the fare and your status, so ask before you fly.

Leaving Israel takes longer than most departures. The Israel Airports Authority asks passengers to be at the terminal three hours before an international flight for the security check; around the holidays, allow more.

The railway station is on the lower level of Terminal 3, and trains reach Tel Aviv's Savidor Center in about 15 to 20 minutes, with direct trains to Jerusalem too. Trains stop from Friday evening to Saturday evening and on Jewish holidays, so book a taxi or car if you land then.

Booking tips

  • Arrive at Ben Gurion at least three hours before your flight home; security screening for international flights is thorough.
  • El Al does not fly on Shabbat, so Friday-evening and Saturday departures are limited.
  • Passover and the High Holidays fill early; book well ahead for those dates.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
