Guide: New York to Dubai
New York to Dubai is about 12.5 hours eastbound and close to 14 hours westbound. Emirates flies nonstop from JFK to Dubai International, and its Newark flight stops in Athens on the way. Dubai is Emirates' hub, so the same ticket can continue to India, Africa, the Indian Ocean or Asia. Emirates business class fares include lounge access in Dubai and, in many cities, a chauffeur service to and from the airport; check what your ticket includes. Winter is Dubai's high season.
Which airport to use in New York and in the Gulf
For a nonstop, the choice is made for you: flight data for the week of 18 October 2026 showed both daily Emirates nonstops leaving JFK Terminal 4. Emirates also flies daily from Newark Terminal B, but that flight stops in Athens, and a third JFK departure stops in Milan. New Jersey travelers can weigh the easier drive to Newark against a longer trip.

Emirates lands at Terminal 3 of Dubai International (DXB). Some travelers consider Abu Dhabi instead: Etihad flies nonstop from JFK to Zayed International Airport twice a day on its October 2026 schedule, using the Airbus A350-1000. That suits meetings in Abu Dhabi, or a backup when Emirates is full, but Dubai is then a long road transfer away.
Abu Dhabi has one advantage on the way home: US Customs and Border Protection runs preclearance there, so on precleared flights you clear US entry before boarding and land in New York like a domestic passenger. CBP lists only daytime hours, so ask whether your Etihad return is precleared. Dubai has no preclearance, so Emirates passengers clear immigration and customs at JFK or Newark.
Nonstop or one stop
Emirates is the only airline flying the route nonstop. On the October 2026 timetable it runs two daily nonstops from JFK, EK204 in the late morning and EK202 late at night, and both were scheduled with the Airbus A380, though the aircraft can change. Scheduled times are just under 13 hours eastbound and about 14 hours 15 minutes westbound.
United used to fly Newark to Dubai nonstop, but the route is suspended. A September 2026 report put the earliest restart at 27 March 2027, so treat any United Dubai schedule for this winter with caution until United confirms it.
The Emirates one-stops keep you on one airline and one ticket. EK206 leaves JFK late in the evening via Milan, and EK210 leaves Newark just before midnight via Athens, landing in Dubai late the next evening. Both take about three hours longer than the nonstop, and the Newark flight used a Boeing 777-300 on the dates checked. A connection through Europe on another airline also works when the nonstops are full; your agent can compare options for your dates.
Overnight or daytime: matching the flight to your arrival
The two nonstops make very different trips. EK204 leaves JFK late in the morning and lands in Dubai around breakfast time the next day. Have the first meal, stay awake for a few hours, then sleep through what is night in Dubai. You land with a full day ahead, so ask your hotel about early check-in.
EK202 leaves JFK late at night and lands in Dubai the following evening. It suits a full working day in New York first: sleep soon after takeoff, stay up for the second half and go to bed on Dubai time. Dubai stays four hours ahead of GMT all year, eight hours ahead of New York in summer and nine in winter, so flight times can shift by an hour when New York changes its clocks in November.
Coming home, EK203 leaves Dubai in the middle of the night and reaches JFK in the morning, a true overnight flight where a flat bed earns its keep. EK201 leaves Dubai in the morning and lands at JFK in the afternoon. Treat it as a daytime flight: work, rest without a full sleep, and go to bed on New York time.
When to go and what moves the fare
Dubai's busy season is its cooler one. The UAE government describes the climate as warm and sunny in winter and hot and humid in summer, and in December 2025 Emirates called the month peak tourist season, with Dubai schools closed for most of it and very heavy traffic through DXB. Expect the busiest flights in December and around New Year, so book those dates early.
Events add pressure. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, according to an October 2026 report. Ramadan 2027 is projected to begin on 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr expected on 9 or 10 March, subject to the moon sighting; Eid brings a public holiday in the UAE. If you travel during Ramadan, check opening hours before planning meetings or dinners.
The 2026 conflict in the Gulf has disrupted commercial flights, and United's Dubai route stays suspended, so schedules can change at short notice. If your dates are flexible, traveling outside the December peak and school holidays usually gives more choice of flights and seats.
Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026
As of October 2026, US citizens on a regular passport do not need to apply for a UAE visa before traveling. According to the UAE Embassy in Washington, a visa is issued on arrival for up to 90 days within 180 days, the passport must be valid at least six months beyond arrival, and you need a return or onward ticket. Overstays are fined daily. Rules can change, so check before you fly.
The bigger question this year is safety. On 29 August 2026 the State Department issued a Level 3, Reconsider Travel, advisory for the UAE, citing terrorism and armed conflict: since US and Iranian hostilities began on 28 February 2026, there has been a threat of drone and missile attacks and significant disruption to flights. A US Mission security alert of 19 September 2026 told Americans to expect possible cancellations and airspace closures. UAE airspace fully reopened in early May 2026 and Emirates restored most of its network, but enroll in STEP, buy travel insurance and keep plans flexible.
Local law matters too. The UAE treats narcotic and psychotropic medicines as controlled items, and some need a Ministry of Health and Prevention permit before you bring them in, so check anything you take regularly and carry the prescription. The advisory also warns of strict rules on drugs, social behavior and filming officials, infrastructure or military activity.
Baggage, lounges and the ground in Dubai
Emirates uses a piece allowance on flights to and from the Americas. Business class passengers can check two bags of up to 32 kg (70 lb) each and carry on one 7 kg bag plus a 7 kg briefcase or garment bag. If your trip starts on another airline, different baggage rules may apply.
At JFK, Emirates business class passengers use the Emirates Lounge in Terminal 4; at Newark, Emirates uses a partner lounge in Terminal B. In Dubai, Emirates has business class lounges in Concourses A and B, with direct boarding from the Concourse A lounges. On the A380, business class seats turn into flat beds, and the Onboard Lounge is offered on selected routes, depending on the aircraft.
From DXB, the Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 from early morning to around midnight, later on Fridays and starting later on Sundays. Taxi ranks at each terminal run around the clock, and Uber, Careem and Bolt use marked pickup points. Emirates offers business class passengers chauffeur-drive in Dubai and New York, booked at least 10 hours ahead, though not every ticket includes it, so ask. For December 2025 Emirates advised arriving at DXB three hours before departure, sound advice for any December flight home.
Booking tips
- Ask whether your fare includes Emirates' chauffeur-drive service, offered with business class in Dubai and many other cities.
- If Dubai is a stopover on a longer trip, plan at least one night to rest before the next long flight.
- November to March is high season in Dubai; book early for those months.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
