Guide: Los Angeles to Sydney

Los Angeles to Sydney is about 14.5 to 15 hours outbound and around 13.5 to 14 hours on the return. Qantas, United and Delta fly nonstop from LAX to Sydney, with late-evening departures that arrive early in the morning. Because you cross the International Date Line, a flight that leaves on Monday night lands on Wednesday morning. Coming home, you arrive in Los Angeles earlier on the same day you left Sydney. On a flight this long, a lie-flat seat with direct aisle access is worth the most.

Which airport: Kingsford Smith or the new Western Sydney airport

Every Sydney nonstop leaves from LAX, but not from the same terminal: October 2026 schedule data show Qantas at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, Delta at Terminal 3 and United at Terminal 7. In Sydney, all of these flights land at Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) Terminal 1, the international terminal. The airport sits about 8 km (5 miles) from the central business district, and its operator puts the drive at about 25 minutes in light traffic.

Sydney is also gaining a second airport. Western Sydney International, about 44 km (27 miles) west of the city center, is scheduled to open to passenger flights on October 25, 2026, starting with domestic flights, Air New Zealand to Auckland from October 26 and Singapore Airlines to Singapore from November 23. No US flights are listed, and its metro line is not expected before 2027. For the harbor, the city center or the eastern suburbs, Kingsford Smith remains the airport to fly into.

Nonstop or one stop from LAX

Qantas, Delta and United each fly LAX to Sydney nonstop every day in the late 2026 schedules. Qantas flies QF12 on an Airbus A380 with its Business Suite seats, Delta flies DL41 on an Airbus A350-900, which Delta says carries 40 Delta One seats on its LAX international routes, and United flies UA839 on a Boeing 787-9 with Polaris. Scheduled times run about 15 to 15.5 hours to Sydney and about 14 hours back.

Schedule data also show American Airlines flying AA73 from LAX to Sydney daily on a Boeing 777-300ER, sold as Flagship Business, and Cirium data reported in February 2026 describe it as a year-round route. Ask your agent to confirm the schedule for your dates.

A connection rarely saves time from Los Angeles, but it can open up seats when the nonstops are full. Air New Zealand flies LAX to Auckland on a Boeing 777-300ER with Business Premier, then connects across the Tasman. Qantas also flies LAX to Melbourne, and Delta serves Brisbane and Melbourne from LAX, so a short domestic flight into Sydney on the same ticket also works. Expect several extra hours.

Overnight or daytime: how the timing works

Every LAX departure to Sydney is a late-evening flight. In the schedule from late October 2026, Delta leaves at about 10:20 pm, Qantas at about 10:25 pm, American at about 11:35 pm and United at about 11:40 pm. They land between about 7:25 am and 9:05 am two calendar days later, because the route crosses the International Date Line: leave on a Monday night and you arrive on Wednesday morning. Times shift by an hour or two between schedule periods through the year.

That timing suits one long block of sleep. Eat in the lounge, shorten or skip the main meal on board, and you can sleep for much of the Pacific crossing. The early arrival usually comes before standard hotel check-in, so book an early check-in or plan a light first day.

The return gives you a real choice. Delta and United leave Sydney mid-morning and reach LAX at about 5:35 am and 6 am on the same calendar day: a daytime flight that ends in a short night. Qantas leaves Sydney at about 5:45 pm and lands at about 1:30 pm, so you sleep through the night and arrive in the afternoon. Schedule data list Delta's return Monday to Saturday from October 26, 2026.

When to go and what moves the fare

Seasons run opposite to California's. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Sydney show January as the warmest month, with highs around 26°C (79°F), and July as the coolest, with highs around 16°C (61°F) and lows near 8°C (47°F). Rain falls through the whole year; March and June are the wettest months on average and September the driest.

Demand peaks over the Australian summer. Late December and January combine Christmas, New Year and the New South Wales school summer break, and airlines add capacity: Delta, for example, moves its Melbourne flight to daily for the peak period beginning December 22. Business class seats are usually tightest and fares highest in these weeks, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Australia's autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are usually quieter, with mild weather in the city. Watch the school holidays even then: in 2027, New South Wales schools break from April 12 to 23, July 5 to 16 and September 27 to October 8, and flights can be busier around those weeks.

Entry rules for US passport holders, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) to visit Australia; check before you fly. The Department of Home Affairs page, updated October 12, 2026, lists US passports as eligible and says you apply in the Australian ETA app from outside Australia. There is no visa application charge, though the app carries a service fee. Most applicants hear back immediately, and Home Affairs suggests holding off on travel arrangements until the ETA is granted.

The ETA is valid for 12 months or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries of up to three months each for tourism or business visitor activities; it does not allow work. It is linked digitally to your passport, so a new passport means a new ETA. Home Affairs also recommends health insurance, since visitors pay their own medical costs.

On arrival, most passengers complete an Incoming Passenger Card with customs, quarantine, health and character declarations; the Border Force is piloting a digital version in the Qantas app on select Qantas flights into Sydney. Biosecurity rules are strict: fresh fruit and homemade food are on the do-not-bring list, and prescription medicines and duty-free alcohol or tobacco must be declared. When in doubt, declare it.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in Sydney

Qantas allows business class passengers on flights to and from North and South America two checked pieces of up to 32 kg (70 lb) each, and Delta applies a 70 lb limit per piece in Delta One. United's and American's allowances depend on the fare, so confirm them when you book, especially if your ticket mixes airlines.

At LAX, the Qantas Los Angeles Business Lounge is airside on level 5, open 6:30 am to midnight, with dining and showers. Delta One passengers get dedicated check-in with private TSA screening and a Delta One Lounge in Terminal 3, open 4:15 am to 11:30 pm. United's Polaris lounge is in Terminal 7; One Mile at a Time listed its hours in May 2026 as 6:30 am to 10:30 pm, earlier than United's late departure, so check current hours. Basic Polaris fares exclude it.

In Sydney, the train is the quickest way into town: Sydney Airport puts the city 13 minutes away, with trains about every 10 minutes from the station past Arrivals Hall A. A taxi or rideshare takes about 20 minutes. For a domestic connection, the train to the domestic terminals takes 2 minutes, and a free transfer bus runs every 15 minutes from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm. Going home, the Qantas Sydney International Business Lounge is in Terminal 1 near Gate 24, open 5 am to 10 pm.

Booking tips

  • Sleep in one long block: eat in the lounge before the late departure and skip the main meal on board.
  • December to February is Australia's summer and the busiest season for US travelers; book early for the holidays.
  • Going on to Melbourne, Brisbane or New Zealand? Book the connection on the same ticket.
  • US passport holders need an Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) before flying; apply through the official app.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
