Guide: Los Angeles to Manila

Los Angeles to Manila is one of the busiest routes for Filipino American families, and one of the few to the Philippines with a nonstop. Philippine Airlines flies nonstop from LAX to Manila's Ninoy Aquino International, about 14 to 15 hours westbound and 12 to 13 hours back, and added flights for 2026. Business class travelers also connect through Tokyo on ANA or Japan Airlines, Seoul on Korean Air or Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, which splits the Pacific crossing into two flights.

Which airport and terminal: LAX to Manila's NAIA

On the Los Angeles side, plan around LAX. The Philippine Airlines nonstop leaves from there, as do the Asian airlines that connect to Manila: Korean Air and Asiana to Seoul, Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong, China Airlines, EVA Air and Starlux to Taipei, and ANA and Japan Airlines to Tokyo.

In Manila you land at Ninoy Aquino International (MNL), about 7 km south of Manila proper and southwest of Makati. Philippine Airlines has flown its international flights from Terminal 1 since June 16, 2023 and its domestic flights from Terminal 2, with a free airside shuttle between the two. That helps if Cebu, Davao or Iloilo is your real destination; Mactan-Cebu is the airline's second hub.

Since a reshuffle on March 29, 2026 moved Japan Airlines there, Terminal 3 handles ANA, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Starlux and Singapore Airlines, while Korean Air, EVA Air and China Airlines use Terminal 1. Arriving on one of them and flying on with Philippine Airlines can mean a terminal change; a free landside shuttle links the terminals.

Nonstop or one stop from LAX

The nonstop on this route is Philippine Airlines. Schedule data for October 2026 show two daily flights, PR 113 around midday and PR 103 late at night, both on Boeing 777s, taking about 15 hours westbound and about 13 hours back. In November 2025 the airline announced three round trips on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from June 1, 2026, but the October 2026 schedule data list only the two daily flights, so ask your agent whether a third runs on your dates.

The aircraft can change. From September 12 to 24, 2026 the airline flew its new Airbus A350-1000 on the route on even-numbered dates in place of the 777. That cabin has lie-flat suites with sliding doors in a 1-2-1 layout; older aircraft use different business seats, so check the seat map.

A one-stop trip pairs a long flight with a short one. Korean Air's Prestige Class flight from LAX reaches Seoul Incheon around 5 am, and its morning flight on to Manila takes a little over four hours. Cathay Pacific flies to Hong Kong, two hours from Manila; EVA Air flies to Taipei; ANA, with The Room, and Japan Airlines, with the JAL Sky Suite, connect in Tokyo. Cathay's LAX flight is scheduled on an Airbus A350-900 from late October 2026, while its Aria Suite is on refitted 777-300ERs.

Connections help when the nonstop is full at Christmas or you want a stopover. Asiana's Seoul to Manila service is listed as ending on December 17, 2026.

Overnight or daytime: how the timings work

Manila keeps UTC+8 all year and does not observe daylight saving time, so it is 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 16 hours ahead once the clocks go back in November. Flying west you cross the International Date Line and lose a day.

Philippine Airlines gives you a real choice. In the schedule from October 25, 2026, the midday flight leaves LAX around 12:55 pm and lands around 6:25 pm the next day, so you can arrive, eat and sleep at a normal local hour. The late-night flight leaves around 11 pm and lands around 5:40 am two calendar days later, so you sleep on board and reach Manila before dawn, often hours before a hotel room is ready.

Coming home, PR 112 leaves Manila around 11:25 am and lands at LAX around 10 am the same day, and PR 102 leaves around 10:20 pm and lands around 8 pm the same evening. The late flight gives you a last full day in Manila.

Most connections leave LAX late at night. Cathay Pacific goes around 11:35 pm from late October, Korean Air around 11:50 pm and EVA Air shortly after midnight, all reaching their hubs around dawn. Japan Airlines' Haneda to Manila flight leaves just before 2 am, so a Tokyo connection can mean a late-night wait.

When to go and what moves the fare

PAGASA, the national weather agency, divides the year into a dry season from December to May and a rainy season from June to November. The cool dry months, December to February, are the most comfortable, with January the coolest; March to May is hot and humid, with May the warmest month. Typhoons are the wild card: about 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine area each year, and the peak runs from July through October.

Family travel shapes this route as much as the weather. The Philippine Christmas season begins in September, peaks in December with the Simbang Gabi dawn Masses from December 16 to 24, and winds down in January, and Filipinos returning home add to the rush. December flights from LAX tend to fill early and fares run higher. Holy Week, when Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are national holidays, and All Saints' Day on November 1, when many families travel to their home provinces, are busy times too.

Demand is not only seasonal: Philippine Airlines said it was adding Los Angeles flights from June 1, 2026 to keep up with customer demand. Outside the holiday peaks, for example after the Christmas season ends in January and before Holy Week, seats can be easier to find, though this route has no reliably quiet month.

Entry rules for US passport holders

As of October 2026, US citizens can visit the Philippines without a visa. The Bureau of Immigration admits nationals covered by Executive Order 408 for an initial 30 days, and the United States is in that group. A stay can be extended through the Bureau, first by 29 days and then by one, two or six months. Visitors are expected to hold a passport valid for at least six months from arrival. Rules can change, so check before you fly.

Every arriving passenger also registers in eTravel, the government's free online travel declaration, at etravel.gov.ph or in the eGov PH app. The Bureau's current advisory asks arriving foreign and Filipino passengers to register or update their details at least 72 hours before they travel, and warns that foreign nationals who knowingly give false information may be refused entry. Dual US and Philippine citizens traveling on a Philippine passport register when leaving as well.

There is no separate electronic travel authorization for US passport holders; the Philippines lists its ETA for Taiwanese nationals only. If you connect in Asia, check that stop's transit rules too.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in Manila

Allowances depend on the airline and the fare, and on a ticket that mixes airlines more than one set of rules can apply. ANA, for example, allows business class bags of up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each and 62 linear inches, with one or two free pieces depending on the fare. Carrying gifts home? Confirm the allowance for every flight on the ticket, including a domestic one.

At LAX, Tom Bradley International Terminal has nine lounges, among them Star Alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam lounges and a Korean Air lounge, so ask your agent which one your ticket opens. In Manila, Philippine Airlines opened a new flagship lounge in Terminal 1 on December 5, 2023, useful before the flight home.

There is no rail link to the terminals: the nearest LRT Line 1 station, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, is about 1.5 km from Terminal 1. Ride-hailing pickups at Terminal 3 are in the multi-level parking building, and UBE Express premium buses run point to point to Makati, Manila, Pasay, Quezon City and other districts. Build in extra time for the drive back to the airport.

Booking tips

  • The Philippine Airlines nonstop saves the most time; a one-stop trip through Tokyo, Seoul or Hong Kong adds a few hours but offers a different choice of business class seats.
  • December is the peak month for trips home, with Christmas and New Year; book holiday dates to Manila early.
  • Ask your agent to put onward flights to Cebu, Davao or Iloilo on the same ticket, so if a delay makes you miss one, the airline rebooks you.
  • US citizens can visit the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days; complete the eTravel registration in the days before you arrive.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
