Guide: Los Angeles to Tokyo
Los Angeles to Tokyo is about 11.5 to 12 hours westbound and around 10 hours coming home. ANA, Japan Airlines, Delta and American fly nonstop from LAX, with flights into both Haneda and Narita, and Singapore Airlines flies LAX to Narita on its way to Singapore. You cross the International Date Line, so you land a day after you leave. Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo than Narita, which makes it the first choice for most business travelers.
Which airport: Haneda or Narita
Tokyo has two international airports, and LAX has nonstops to both. Haneda (HND) sits on the bay close to the center: its terminal operator puts Shinagawa about 15 minutes away by train and Tokyo Station about 30. Narita (NRT) is much farther out. Keisei's Skyliner reaches Keisei Ueno in as little as 41 minutes and JR's Narita Express serves Tokyo Station, Shibuya and Shinjuku, but door to door Narita takes longer.

Most travelers choose Haneda: in the twelve months to July 2026 it was the second-busiest international route from LAX by passengers, while Narita ranked ninth. Narita still earns a look. It suits hotels around Ueno, it is the only Tokyo stop for Singapore Airlines, and it is worth checking when the Haneda flights you want are full.
Avoid landing at one airport and leaving from the other: Haneda's operator quotes 65 to 85 minutes between them by airport shuttle and 90 to 115 minutes by train.
Nonstop or one stop from LAX
In October 2026 schedules, ANA runs three daily nonstops, two to Haneda and one to Narita, all on Boeing 787s; AeroRoutes reported on September 14, 2026 that ANA plans a larger 787-9 on most days of its after-midnight Haneda flight this winter. Japan Airlines flies daily nonstop to Haneda on an Airbus A350-1000 and to Narita on a Boeing 787-9. Delta flies daily nonstop to Haneda on an Airbus A350-900, and American on a Boeing 787-9.
Singapore Airlines adds another nonstop: its Boeing 777-300ER stops at Narita on the way to Singapore, and the Los Angeles to Narita leg is sold on its own. Third-party schedule data for October 2026 also show United flying LAX to Haneda and LAX to Narita, so ask your agent to confirm United's flights for your dates.
Cabins differ by airline: JAL sells its JAL Sky Suite, Delta has Delta One, American Flagship Business and Singapore Airlines Business Class. ANA's The Room is fitted to its newer-layout Boeing 777-300ERs, not the 787s it schedules from LAX, so check the seat map for any flight. With this many nonstops, a one-stop trip rarely makes sense from Los Angeles unless the nonstops are full or you want a second city on the ticket.
Overnight or daytime: how the timings work
Westbound, most flights leave in daylight. In October 2026 schedule data, Delta goes first at about 10 am, United follows in the late morning, ANA and JAL leave for Narita and JAL for Haneda in the early afternoon, Singapore Airlines a little after 2 pm, and ANA's later Haneda flight just before 5 pm. From October 25 most of these times move by up to an hour. Flights take about 11 to 12 hours, and Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 17 in winter, so you land the next afternoon or evening.
Two flights leave after midnight: ANA's at about 12:50 am and American's at about 1:25 am, moving to 12:45 am from October 25. Both reach Haneda around 5 am Tokyo time, which suits a full working day in Los Angeles, but you arrive before most hotel rooms are ready, and ANA's arrival lounge at Haneda Terminal 2 was closed as of October 2026.
Coming home, flights take about 10 hours. JAL leaves Haneda around 5 pm, ANA and JAL leave Narita between 5 and 5:30 pm, Delta leaves Haneda in the afternoon, and United and Singapore Airlines around 6:30 pm, all landing that morning or early afternoon. ANA's 9 pm Haneda flight lands around 3 pm. American leaves Haneda just before noon and lands at about 6 am, moving to about 1 pm and 7 am from October 25, and ANA's after-midnight flight lands the previous evening, which is the date line at work.
When to go and what moves the fare
Japan's own holidays move demand as much as American ones. JNTO names three periods when domestic travel peaks and transport fills up: New Year from late December to early January, Golden Week from late April to early May, and Obon in mid-August. New Year and Obon overlap with American school breaks, so seats from LAX go early and fares tend to be higher.
The seasons count too. JNTO says cherry blossoms move north through Japan between March and May, the rainy season begins in May to June, summers are very hot and humid, and typhoons may disrupt travel in August and September. Autumn leaves color the country from late September to early December, and winter brings many clear, sunny days.
Blossom season and the autumn colors tend to draw many visitors, so book early if your trip depends on them. Demand tends to be lower in the wetter early summer and the winter weeks after New Year.
Entry rules for US passport holders
As of October 2026, US citizens can visit Japan without a visa for short stays: the US Embassy in Tokyo says tourists can stay up to three months, and JNTO explains that exempt visitors may stay up to 90 days but may not work for pay. The embassy says your passport should be valid for your whole stay and that carrying it at all times is a legal requirement. Rules can change, so check both sources before you fly.
JNTO's visa page, checked on October 19, 2026, lists no electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors. What does help is Visit Japan Web, the Digital Agency's online service for immigration and customs arrival procedures. JNTO says registration is not required, but Japan Customs, which asks every arriving passenger to declare their belongings, recommends declaring through it, and electronic customs gates operate at seven international airports.
Check your medicines before you pack. Japan's Narcotics Control Department says some prescription drugs cannot be brought in at all, including amphetamine products such as Adderall, and that medicines classed as narcotics or stimulants' raw materials, such as Vyvanse or pseudoephedrine, need permission in advance. Ask your doctor which category yours falls into and apply early.
Baggage, lounges and the ground in Tokyo
Allowances depend on the airline and the fare. ANA's chart for most international flights allows business class bags of up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each and 62 linear inches, with one or two free pieces depending on the fare, so read the fare rules rather than assuming two.
At LAX, October 2026 schedule data show ANA, JAL and Singapore Airlines at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, Delta at Terminal 3 and United at Terminal 7. ANA business class passengers use the Star Alliance Lounge on Tom Bradley's sixth floor, open from 8 am to 1 am. Delta One passengers get dedicated check-in with private TSA screening, and Delta says LAX is the first airport in its network with two Delta One Lounges.
In Tokyo, most Haneda flights from LAX use Terminal 3, while ANA also flies internationally from Terminal 2 and keeps lounges in both. At Narita, ANA, Singapore Airlines and United use Terminal 1 and JAL Terminal 2. Haneda has stands for regular taxis and app-booked cars. With large bags, avoid the weekday train rush, around 7:30 to 9 am and 5:30 to 7 pm.
Booking tips
- Choose Haneda when you can: it is about 30 minutes from central Tokyo, while Narita takes an hour or more.
- Singapore Airlines sells business class on its LAX to Narita leg on its own, which adds another option on this route.
- Cherry blossom season in late March and early April and the autumn leaves in November are the busiest times; book early.
- ANA (Star Alliance) and Japan Airlines (oneworld) are in different alliances, so check both for seats.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

Diesel Bond was such a perfect agent. My Visa to Pakistan was extremely hard to do by myself. After 4 months going back forth with submission I was totally worn out. I had never used agency before and will never go back to doing myself! Your agency gave me such peace of mind! Will refer you to everyone! Charles Robards
