Guide: New York to New Delhi

New York to New Delhi is a long trip of roughly 14 to 16 hours nonstop, and longer with a connection. Air India flies nonstop from JFK and Newark to Indira Gandhi International, though airspace closures have changed its routings and flight times at times. Many business class travelers connect instead, through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, London, Frankfurt or Paris, which splits the trip into two shorter flights. Delhi is also a hub for onward flights across India.

Which airport to use: JFK or Newark, and Delhi Terminal 3

In New York, the airline picks the airport for you. American flies from JFK Terminal 8, and schedule data shows Air India leaving JFK Terminal 4. United flies from its Newark hub, Terminal C. Air India suspended its Newark route for the summer of 2026, citing airspace restrictions and record fuel prices, so check whether it has returned.

Read the full guideHide the full guide

In Delhi there is one answer: Indira Gandhi International (DEL) handles international flights at Terminal 3, which also serves domestic flights, including Air India's, so onward connections on one ticket stay in one building. Some low-cost domestic airlines use Terminals 1 and 2; if your onward flight is on a separate ticket, confirm its terminal.

Nonstop or one stop: who flies it in late 2026

Three airlines fly nonstop on schedules filed for late October 2026. United flies daily from Newark with a Boeing 787-9 carrying 48 lie-flat Polaris seats, each with direct aisle access, on a route it has flown year-round since 2005. American flies daily from JFK with a Boeing 787-9 offering Flagship Business, scheduled through at least March 2027. Air India flies from JFK with an Airbus A350-900 six days a week, adding a seventh weekly flight from 3 November 2026 to 28 February 2027.

Expect the trip home to take longer. The US airlines are scheduled at about 14.5 to 15 hours to Delhi and about 17 hours back, which makes Delhi to JFK American's longest scheduled route. Air India's flights run close to 16 hours out and 17 back. Airspace closures have also forced stops: in early 2026 Air India routed its flights from India to New York through Rome for fuel until late March, and said the arrangement could be extended. Ask your agent whether your flight is filed as a nonstop on your date.

A one-stop trip splits the distance. Through the Gulf the last leg is short: about three and a half hours from Doha on Qatar Airways or Abu Dhabi on Etihad, and a little over three from Dubai, where Emirates runs four daily flights. Through Europe the legs are more even: British Airways flies Heathrow to Delhi three times a day in about eight and a half hours, and Lufthansa flies daily from Frankfurt. Gulf airspace was partly closed from late February 2026 amid hostilities involving the US, Israel and Iran; the UAE reopened its airspace fully in May, but check the current picture first.

Overnight or daytime: matching the departure to your arrival

The US airlines leave New York in the evening, United around 8:50 p.m. from Newark and American around 8:35 p.m. from JFK on late October schedules, and land in Delhi around 9 p.m. the next day. Sleep through the first half of the flight, stay awake for the second, and go to bed on arrival. Delhi keeps India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 with no daylight saving, so it is nine and a half hours ahead of New York in summer and ten and a half in winter.

Air India's JFK flight leaves in the late morning and reaches Delhi around midday the next day. Treat it as a daytime departure: eat, work for a while, then sleep through what is night in Delhi. You land with an afternoon to fill, which helps reset your clock but makes for a long first day.

Coming home, the nonstops leave Delhi around midnight. United departs around 11 p.m. and reaches Newark at about 6:30 a.m., American leaves around 11:20 p.m. and lands at JFK before 7 a.m., and Air India's flight leaves after midnight and lands at JFK in the morning. These are true overnight flights where a flat bed earns its place.

When to go and what moves the fare

The cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable in Delhi and the busiest on this route. Summer heat builds from April and peaks in late May or early June, with average highs around 40 C (104 F) and heat waves close to 45 C. The monsoon usually arrives in late June or early July, and August is the wettest month. Those hot and wet months are quieter, which tends to mean more choice of seats.

Winter has two catches. Dense fog in December and January cuts visibility and can disrupt flights, although Delhi airport has CAT III-B landing systems on some runways for low visibility. From late October to the end of November, smoke from crop burning and still air can leave the city under smog for weeks, which matters if you have asthma or travel with children.

Diwali is a peak time for family trips to India. In 2026 the festival runs from 6 to 10 November, with the main day on the 8th; in 2027 it falls on 29 October. Seats around those dates and the year-end holidays tend to sell first and fares run higher, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US citizens need a visa arranged before travel, and for most visitors that means the e-Visa. The United States is on the official eligibility list, and Delhi is one of the designated airports where e-Visa holders may enter. Apply at least four days before arrival; the one-year and five-year e-Tourist visas and the e-Business visa can be requested up to 120 days ahead. Rules change, so check before you fly.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months when you apply and have at least two blank pages. Biometrics are taken at immigration on arrival, and you should carry a copy of your electronic travel authorization. The one-year and five-year e-Tourist visas allow multiple entries, with no more than 180 days in India per calendar year. Fees are not refunded if an application is refused.

India also requires an e-Arrival Card: since 1 April 2026, reports say, foreign nationals file it online within 72 hours before landing, through the Bureau of Immigration website, the Indian Visa Online portal or the Su-Swagatam app, and show the QR code it produces on arrival. Apply for the visa only through the government portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, which warns against intermediaries asking for extra payment, and read the State Department page for India before you go.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in Delhi

Baggage allowances depend on the airline and the fare, so check your ticket rather than assuming. If your trip combines airlines, ask your agent whose rules apply and whether bags are checked through to your final city. Coming home through Abu Dhabi, US Customs and Border Protection runs preclearance there, listed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., so on a precleared flight you clear US entry before boarding. There is no preclearance in India.

At Newark, United's Polaris Lounge is in Terminal C between gates C102 and C120. Basic Polaris fares do not include access, so check your fare type. At JFK, American's main lounge in Terminal 8, the Greenwich Lounge it shares with British Airways, is near gate 12 and serves as its Flagship Lounge for business class passengers on long-haul international flights.

From Terminal 3, the Airport Express metro reaches New Delhi railway station in about 15 to 20 minutes, stopping at Aerocity, Dhaula Kuan and Shivaji Stadium. Trains run from about 5 a.m. until close to midnight, every 10 to 15 minutes, so a 9 p.m. arrival usually still makes one. After a 15-hour flight, many travelers prefer a car straight to the hotel.

Booking tips

  • Compare Gulf connections (Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi) with European ones (British Airways via London, Lufthansa via Frankfurt, Air France via Paris).
  • From the Gulf hubs, the flight to Delhi is only about 3 to 4 hours, so most of the trip is on the long first leg.
  • October to March is the most comfortable season in North India and the busiest for travel; book Diwali and wedding-season dates early.
  • US citizens need an Indian visa or e-Visa before departure.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
