Guide: New York to Athens

New York to Athens is about 9.5 hours eastbound and around 11 hours westbound. Emirates flies nonstop between Newark and Athens year-round as part of its Dubai service, and in the peak season US and Greek airlines add more nonstops from JFK and Newark. Flights leave in the afternoon or evening and land in Athens the next morning or around midday. Many travelers continue to the islands, so plan the onward connection when you book rather than after you land.

Which airport: Newark or JFK, and always Athens International

Every nonstop from New York lands at Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), the only airport serving the city. It sits east of Athens, about 30 km (19 miles) by road from the center because of the hills in between, and it is the hub of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, which matters if your trip continues to an island.

In New York, the airline picks the airport. Emirates and United fly from Newark, Emirates from Terminal B. Delta and American fly from JFK, Delta from Terminal 4 and American from Terminal 8. Because Emirates is the only airline on the route all winter, an off-season trip usually means Newark. In summer you can choose, so start from whichever airport is easier from home: Newark for New Jersey and the west side of Manhattan, JFK for Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

Athens has one main terminal and a smaller satellite linked underground. Flights to and from the United States use Hall A, the area for non-Schengen departures, while Hall B handles Schengen and domestic flights, including most island connections.

Nonstop or one stop: one year-round airline, more in summer

Emirates is the year-round nonstop. Its Newark to Athens flight is one leg of a service that continues to Dubai, but you can book the transatlantic leg on its own, in Emirates Business Class on a Boeing 777. Seat layouts differ across the 777 fleet, so check the seat map once your flight is booked.

The other nonstops are seasonal. United's Newark flight, on a Boeing 787-10 with Polaris, is scheduled from 5 March to 18 November 2026. Delta's May 2026 filing keeps a daily JFK flight in Delta One through 3 January 2027, then pauses the route until 7 March; it moved the winter flight to a Boeing 767-400ER, but later schedule data still lists the A330-900neo, so check the seat map. American flies JFK to Athens in summer only, in Flagship Business; its 2026 season ran from 21 May to 8 September. Airlines adjust these windows yearly, so confirm your dates.

One stop is the fallback when the nonstops thin out or sell out. In summer United also flies to Athens from Washington and Chicago O'Hare, and American flies summer routes from Philadelphia, Charlotte, Chicago and, from 2026, Dallas-Fort Worth, so a short domestic flight plus a lie-flat nonstop is one option. A connection through a European hub is another. On that route the second leg is usually a narrower plane with a smaller business cabin, so ask your agent what seat it has.

Overnight or daytime: how the flights are timed

Eastbound flights cross overnight, but the two Newark nonstops land at very different hours. United's schedule left Newark at 3:55 pm and reached Athens at 8:10 am, a short night with a full first day ahead. Emirates leaves Newark just before midnight and lands mid-afternoon the next day, which gives a longer sleep and an afternoon arrival: check in, take a walk and go to bed at local bedtime. Athens is seven hours ahead of New York for most of the year, and the gap shifts briefly in spring and autumn because the clocks change on different dates.

The flight home is a daytime flight on both airlines. United left Athens at 10:25 am and landed at Newark at 2:05 pm, and Emirates leaves Athens in the late afternoon and lands at Newark around 9 pm. Eastbound takes about nine hours, westbound closer to eleven. A lie-flat seat matters most on the way out, when you want real sleep, and the daytime return suits work or a film more than a bed.

When to go and what moves the fare

Summer is the peak. July and August are the hottest months in Athens, with daytime highs averaging around 34 °C (93 °F) and heat waves above that, and they are also the busiest months for the islands. Demand from New York is highest then, and business class fares follow it. More nonstops fly in summer, which adds seats but does not make July cheap.

May, June, September and October are the shoulder months: warm enough for the sea, calmer in the city and often easier to book. Winter in Athens is mild and the wettest season, with most rain from November to January. Fewer travelers go then, but fewer nonstops fly as well, so from January to early March a trip that must be nonstop depends on a single airline. Booking early matters most for summer, holiday weeks and any trip that has to be nonstop in winter.

Entry rules for US passport holders, as of October 2026

Greece is in the Schengen area. As of October 2026, US citizens need no visa for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries together. Your passport should be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave and have been issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may ask for proof of funds and a return or onward ticket.

The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamps. On your first entry under it, officers record your passport details, fingerprints and a facial image, so the first arrival can take longer. You go through it in Athens even when you continue to an island, since the domestic flight is inside the Schengen area.

ETIAS, the travel authorization planned for visa-free visitors, is not running. As of October 2026 the European Commission says no applications are collected and the start date will be announced several months before launch, so ignore any site offering to file one now. Check travel.state.gov and the official EU pages before you fly.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in Athens

Checked bag allowances depend on the airline and the fare, and your e-ticket lists them. Delta, for example, does not accept bags over 70 lb (31.75 kg) on flights to and from Europe. If you continue to an island on a separate ticket, check that flight's allowance too, since a domestic fare can include less than your transatlantic one.

In New York, Delta One passengers use the Delta One Lounge in JFK Terminal 4, between Concourses A and B. United's Polaris Lounge at Newark sits in Terminal C between gates C102 and C120, and standard and flexible Polaris fares include access while base Polaris fares do not. For the flight home, Hall A in Athens has an Aegean Business Lounge and lounges run by Goldair Handling, Skyserv and Swissport. As of September 2026, Goldair's lounge listed American business passengers and Swissport's listed Delta among its airlines, but assignments change, so ask at check-in.

Getting into the city is straightforward. Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma Square in about 40 minutes, with trains every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. The X95 express bus runs to Syntagma around the clock and takes about an hour, and the suburban railway runs to Larissis Station. Taxis wait outside Exit 3 on the arrivals level and charge a flat fare to the center, with a higher rate at night.

For the islands, Aegean and Olympic Air fly from the same terminal, or you can sail from Piraeus, the largest passenger port in Europe, to the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese. Leave a wide gap between landing and an island flight, or spend a night in Athens.

Booking tips

  • Emirates sells business class on its Newark to Athens leg on its own, a year-round nonstop when other airlines cut back for winter.
  • For Mykonos, Santorini or Crete, leave at least two to three hours between your arrival and the island flight, or plan a night in Athens.
  • May and late September to October usually bring easier availability and calmer islands than July and August.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
