A connection adds to the flying time.

Guide: Chicago to London

Chicago to London takes about 8 hours eastbound and about 9 hours on the way back. British Airways, American Airlines and United fly nonstop from O'Hare to Heathrow, with most departures in the late afternoon and evening that land in London the next morning. That makes the eastbound trip a classic overnight: dinner, a lie-flat bed and around five hours of rest. The return is a daytime flight that reaches Chicago in the afternoon or evening. O'Hare also works well for travelers starting in smaller Midwest cities.

Which airport: O'Hare to Heathrow, with a different terminal for each airline

Every nonstop on this route runs from Chicago O'Hare to London Heathrow. FlightStats listed no O'Hare to Gatwick nonstop on 20 October 2026, so Gatwick means a connection.

Read the full guideHide the full guide

At O'Hare, British Airways and American Airlines both depart from Terminal 3, while United leaves from Terminal 1, according to FlightStats flight records for October 2026. All three bring you home to Terminal 5, where O'Hare handles international arrivals and you clear US immigration and customs. Anyone meeting you should go to Terminal 5.

At Heathrow, British Airways uses Terminal 5, American uses Terminal 3 and United uses Terminal 2. Terminals 2 and 3 share one rail station, Heathrow Central, while Terminal 5 has its own, which affects your train time into the city. Mix airlines on a round trip and you may use a different Heathrow terminal each way.

Nonstop or one stop: three airlines fly direct, and a connection rarely helps

Nonstop is the default. In the summer 2026 timetable, which ran to 24 October, British Airways, American Airlines and United each flew three nonstops a day from O'Hare to Heathrow, nine in all. The winter timetables from 25 October list seven a day each way: three on United and two each on British Airways and American. American and British Airways sell seats on each other's flights, so one ticket can pair a BA flight out with an American flight home.

The cabin is Club Suite on British Airways, Flagship Business on American and Polaris on United. In the October 2026 schedules BA flies a Boeing 787-10, delivered with Club Suite and its door, and 777-200s, which BA has refitted with Club Suite at Heathrow. American flies 787-9s; every Flagship Business seat lies flat, but the Flagship Suite with a door comes only on newer deliveries. United flies 767-300ERs, whose Polaris seats become flat beds with aisle access for everyone. Ask your agent which aircraft your date has.

A connection makes sense in two cases. Starting in a smaller Midwest city, one ticket through O'Hare means the airline rebooks you if the first flight runs late. The other is Dublin: Aer Lingus flies twice daily from O'Hare to Dublin and United once in the winter schedules, and Dublin has US preclearance, so on the way home you clear US border checks before boarding. The extra flight seldom beats the nonstop on total time.

Overnight or daytime: a short night east, a day flight home

Eastbound is a short overnight. In the winter timetable, flights land at Heathrow between about 6 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. after scheduled times of about 7 hours 40 minutes to 8 hours 10 minutes. Last winter's O'Hare departures ran from 3:45 p.m. on United to 9:45 p.m. on British Airways; in late October and March, while the clocks are out of step, they leave an hour later. London is six hours ahead most of the year, so a 5 p.m. departure is already 11 p.m. in London, and dinner and breakfast take a share of the night. Expect a few hours of sleep, not a full night.

Pick by your first London commitment. The earliest departures, in the late afternoon, land around 6 to 7 a.m., good for a morning meeting but often early for your hotel room. The last departures, around 9 p.m., leave near a Chicago bedtime and land late morning, which gives the most usable rest.

Westbound is a day flight. Winter Heathrow departures run from 7:40 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and, from November to early March, reach O'Hare between about 11 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. the same day, scheduled at roughly 8 hours 50 minutes to 9 hours 25 minutes. Staying awake on board and sleeping at a normal Chicago hour is the simplest reset.

Watch the clock changes. The UK sets its clocks back on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November 2026, so for that week London is five hours ahead, not six. A similar gap opens in spring 2027, between the US change on 14 March and the UK change on 28 March. Times on your ticket are always local.

When to go: Heathrow's busy summer and quiet late winter

Heathrow's monthly traffic statistics show its North American passenger numbers peaking in July and August and falling to their lowest in February, with January and November also quiet and December picking up again for the holidays. April and October sit in between. Business class fares on this route tend to follow that curve: summer and the weeks around Christmas are usually higher and sell out sooner, and late winter is usually the softest time to buy.

Within a season, flexibility helps most. With seven to nine departures each way a day, moving a day or switching between an early and a late flight can change what is available, so give your agent a date range. For July, August and late December, start looking early.

Entry rules for US citizens: the UK ETA, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US citizens visiting the UK for tourism or business meetings do not need a visa but do need an electronic travel authorization (ETA). The UK government said it would enforce the scheme from 25 February 2026, with airlines checking before you board, so a missing ETA can stop you at the gate in Chicago. Every traveler needs one, children included. Check GOV.UK again before you fly.

Apply in the official UK ETA app or on GOV.UK with the passport you will travel on, an email address, a payment card and a photo of your face. The fee is non-refundable, and GOV.UK warns that other websites charge more. Most decisions arrive within a day, but allow up to 3 working days. An ETA lasts 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers visits of up to 6 months. It does not promise entry; the border officer still decides.

Standard Visitor rules allow meetings and interviews but not paid or unpaid work for a UK company. On arrival, US citizens with a biometric passport and a valid ETA can normally use the ePassport gates from age 8, with travelers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult, according to GOV.UK guidance updated on 6 October 2026.

Baggage, lounges and getting into London

British Airways and American list two checked bags of up to 32 kg (70 lb) each in business class, and United lists the same 70 lb limit per bag for Polaris. Elite status can add more, and on a mixed-airline ticket, ask your agent which allowance applies.

At O'Hare, American's Flagship Lounge sits in Terminal 3 where concourses H and K meet, and it is open to business class passengers on oneworld airlines flying to Europe, which covers both American and British Airways. Business class passengers cannot bring guests. United's Polaris Lounge is in Terminal 1, Concourse C, near gate C18; the cheapest Basic Polaris tickets do not include it.

At Heathrow Terminal 5, British Airways runs an Arrivals lounge for business class passengers, useful after the early landings. BA said on 5 October 2026 that it will redesign it from early 2027, so check that it is open on your date.

Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3 and about 21 minutes from Terminal 5, with trains every 15 minutes, and you can tap a contactless card or phone at the barriers. The Elizabeth line takes about 35 minutes into central London and runs through the city without a change; the Piccadilly line takes 40 to 50 minutes.

Booking tips

  • Starting in a smaller Midwest city? Book through to London on one ticket via O'Hare, so the airline rebooks you if the first flight runs late.
  • American and British Airways sell each other's flights on this route, so one ticket can mix their departure times.
  • For the most sleep, take the latest evening departure and eat before you board.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
