Guide: Los Angeles to London

Los Angeles to London is a long overnight flight of about 10.5 hours eastbound and around 11 hours westbound. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and United fly nonstop from LAX to Heathrow. Eastbound flights leave in the afternoon or evening and land in London the next morning or early afternoon, which gives you time for a real night of sleep. The return is a daytime flight that lands in Los Angeles the same day, so business class on the way home is more about space to work and rest than about sleeping.

Which airport: LAX out, Heathrow in

Every business class nonstop from Los Angeles leaves LAX and lands at Heathrow (LHR), about 14 miles (23 km) west of central London. Flight-tracking data shows no recorded LAX service to Gatwick (LGW), London's second airport, so on this route the real question is which terminal.

Read the full guideHide the full guide

At Heathrow, the terminal follows the airline. British Airways uses Terminal 5 for most flights, with a few at Terminal 3, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines use Terminal 3, and United uses Terminal 2. Terminals 2 and 3 share one rail station and Terminal 5 has its own.

At LAX, most foreign airlines' long-haul flights use the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT, also signed Terminal B), linked airside by skybridges to Terminals 3 and 4. Virgin Atlantic's airport guide sends departing passengers to Terminal 2 for check-in, while its Clubhouse sits past security on the sixth floor of TBIT. The terminals connect on foot behind security, but assignments can change, so check your booking and allow for traffic in the central terminal loop.

Nonstop or one stop: four airlines, up to nine flights a day

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines fly nonstop from LAX to Heathrow all year, and so does United, whose daily flight (UA923) was operating in August and September 2026 and is scheduled through the 2026-27 winter. The winter timetable that starts on 25 October 2026 shows eight daily departures: three on British Airways, two on Virgin Atlantic, two on American and one on United. Virgin adds a third daily flight in summer; in 2026 it ran daily from late April to mid-October.

Cabins differ by aircraft. British Airways sells Club Suite, which has a privacy door, on its Boeing 777-300ERs, which fly two of its three daily LAX flights. The third uses the Airbus A380, which still had the older Club World seat; BA said on 5 October 2026 that the first A380 with an updated Club Suite is expected in the coming months. Every Virgin Atlantic Upper Class seat becomes a fully flat bed, on an A350-1000 or a Boeing 787-9. American flies Boeing 777s in Flagship Business, and the seat varies with the aircraft version, so ask your agent which one is on your date. United sells Polaris on a Boeing 787-9.

British Airways and American sell seats on each other's flights here, so one ticket can pair a BA flight out with an American flight home. With this many nonstops, a one-stop trip mainly makes sense when the nonstops are full on peak dates; a connection through another US gateway adds a domestic leg and several hours.

Overnight east, daytime west

Eastbound is an overnight flight of about 10 hours 20 minutes to 10 hours 45 minutes. In the winter 2026-27 schedules, departures leave LAX between about 4:30 pm and 11:30 pm and land at Heathrow between about 10 am and 5 pm the next day. London is normally eight hours ahead, so a 4:30 pm departure is already past midnight there.

The late-afternoon and early-evening flights line up best with the London night and land in the morning, ready for a full day. Late-evening departures, such as Virgin's 11:30 pm flight, land in mid to late afternoon: you lose most of a day but can go to bed at a normal London hour. Eating before you board and skipping the full dinner buys more sleep.

Westbound is a daytime flight of about 11 hours 15 minutes to 11 hours 30 minutes. Winter departures leave Heathrow between about 10 am and 5:20 pm and reach LAX between about 2:30 pm and 9:40 pm the same day. The flat seat matters less on the way home; staying awake and going to bed on Pacific time resets your body clock fastest.

When to go and what moves the fare

Summer is the peak. Virgin Atlantic's third daily flight runs only in the summer season, and business cabins for June to August dates tend to fill first, with fares usually at their highest. London is mild then: July averages a high of 23.8°C (74.8°F) at Kew Gardens, and July and May are the sunniest months.

Holidays move demand at both ends. The 2027 bank holidays in England include Good Friday (26 March), Easter Monday (29 March), 3 May, 31 May and 30 August. Those long weekends, Thanksgiving on the US side and the year-end holidays tend to push business class demand higher.

The quieter months, with lower fares and more open seats, are usually November to March outside the holidays. January highs average 8.6°C (47.5°F), and October and November are the wettest months. Watch the clock changes: the UK goes back on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November, and in spring the US moves forward on 14 March 2027 and the UK on 28 March, so in those gaps London is seven hours ahead, not eight.

Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US passport holders visiting the UK for tourism or permitted business, such as meetings, can usually stay up to six months without a visa. Your passport should be valid for the whole stay, and visitors may not do paid or unpaid work for a UK company. Border Force officers may ask about your plans and your return travel. Rules change, so check before you fly.

You do need an electronic travel authorization (ETA). The UK government says it has been enforced since 25 February 2026, with airlines checking before boarding. Every traveler needs their own, including children. Apply in the official UK ETA app or on GOV.UK; a decision usually arrives within a day but can take up to three working days. An ETA lasts two years or until the passport expires, covers repeat trips, and is linked to that passport.

Connecting passengers need one too if they pass through UK border control. British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, are exempt, and dual British citizens are advised to travel on a British passport. Avoid websites that imitate government services. On arrival, US passport holders aged 8 or over (8 to 17 with an adult) can normally use the ePassport gates if they hold valid status such as an ETA, according to a GOV.UK page updated on 6 October 2026.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in London

Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class includes two checked bags of up to 32 kg each, and its LAX check-in opens four hours before departure and closes one hour before. British Airways and American set their own business class allowances, which can depend on the fare, so confirm the allowance on your ticket.

Virgin's LAX Clubhouse opens around four hours before Virgin flights. At Heathrow Terminal 3, its Upper Class Wing offers private check-in and a private security channel straight to the Clubhouse, open 5 am to 9:30 pm. After landing, the Revivals arrivals lounge in Terminal 3, open to Upper Class and Delta One passengers, has showers and made-to-order breakfast but closes at 12:30 pm, so it suits morning arrivals. British Airways runs an arrivals lounge at Terminal 5 and plans a full rebuild from early 2027, so check what is open on your date.

The Heathrow Express runs nonstop to Paddington every 15 minutes, taking about 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3 and 21 from Terminal 5, and you can tap a contactless card or phone at the barriers. The Elizabeth line runs from Heathrow through central stations such as Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon, handy for the West End or the City, and the Piccadilly line also serves the airport.

Booking tips

  • Eastbound, pick the latest departure that still lands at a workable hour: you get a longer night on board and an easier first day in London.
  • On the daytime return, stay awake and go to bed on Pacific time. It is the fastest way to reset after the trip.
  • If the nonstops are full, connect in New York or Boston. The transcontinental leg is often lie-flat, and the Atlantic crossing that follows is short.
  • April to May and September to October balance London weather with better business class availability than peak summer.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

Diesel Bond was such a perfect agent. My Visa to Pakistan was extremely hard to do by myself. After 4 months going back forth with submission I was totally worn out. I had never used agency before and will never go back to doing myself! Your agency gave me such peace of mind! Will refer you to everyone! Charles Robards
