Guide: San Francisco to London
San Francisco to London runs about 10 hours eastbound and about 11 hours westbound. British Airways, United and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop from SFO to Heathrow. Eastbound flights leave in the afternoon or evening and land in London the following morning or early afternoon, which is long enough for a proper sleep in a lie-flat seat. Westbound flights leave London during the day and land in San Francisco the same afternoon or evening. With steady business travel between the Bay Area and London, midweek flights tend to fill first.
Which airport: SFO International Terminal to Heathrow
In San Francisco, all three nonstop airlines leave from SFO's International Terminal. United's international flights use Boarding Area G, while most Oneworld and SkyTeam flights, which include British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, board in Boarding Area A. Check your boarding pass for the gate area.

In London, every nonstop from SFO lands at Heathrow, about 14 miles west of central London. SFO's published list of airlines and destinations shows no service to Gatwick, which sits about 30 miles south of the center, so Gatwick only comes up on a connecting trip.
At Heathrow the terminal follows the airline. British Airways uses Terminal 5, its main hub, Virgin Atlantic uses Terminal 3, its home base, and United uses Terminal 2. Terminals 2 and 3 share one rail station and Terminal 5 has its own.
Nonstop or one stop: three airlines all year
British Airways, United and Virgin Atlantic fly SFO to Heathrow nonstop through the year. In the published winter schedules from 24 and 25 October 2026, British Airways runs two daily flights, BA284 on an Airbus A380 and BA286 on a Boeing 777-300ER, United runs two daily, UA901 and UA930, and Virgin Atlantic runs one, VS20, listed as a Boeing 787-9. Over summer 2026 United added a third daily flight and Virgin a second, so the route had seven nonstops a day at its peak.
British Airways sells Club Suite, United sells Polaris and Virgin Atlantic sells Upper Class, and seats vary by aircraft even within one airline. Virgin flew an Airbus A350-1000 on VS20 for much of summer 2026 and lists a 787-9 for winter; United flew 787-9 and 777-200 aircraft. An agent can check the aircraft and seat map for your date.
A connection rarely saves time but helps when the nonstops are full. Aer Lingus flies SFO to Dublin, KLM to Amsterdam, Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, Swiss to Zurich and Air France to Paris, each with a short onward flight to London. Dublin has an extra benefit on the way home: US preclearance means you clear US immigration and customs in Ireland and land at SFO as a domestic arrival.
Overnight eastbound, daytime home
Eastbound, every nonstop is an overnight flight, reaching Heathrow between 7:25 am and 3:10 pm the next day after about 10 to 10.5 hours in the air. From November to early March, last winter's timetables had SFO departures from 12:50 pm on United to 8:40 pm on British Airways; in late October and most of March, while the clocks are out of step, they leave an hour later. London is normally eight hours ahead of San Francisco.
The departure time shapes your first day. The early afternoon United flight lands at breakfast time with a full London day ahead. The evening group, Virgin, United and the first British Airways flight, leaves between about 4:30 and 5:30 pm in winter and lands between about 10:40 am and noon. The late British Airways flight lets you eat before boarding, sleep for most of the crossing and land mid-afternoon, close to hotel check-in time.
Westbound is a daytime flight. Winter departures leave Heathrow between 10:05 am and 3:25 pm and, from November to early March, land at SFO between about 1:20 pm and 6:45 pm the same day, after about 11 to 11.5 hours. Summer adds later departures, such as Virgin at 5:20 pm. Stay awake and go to bed at a normal Pacific hour to reset fastest.
When to go and what moves the fare
Seat supply is seasonal: in late October the published schedules drop from seven daily nonstops to five. June to August is the peak, when London is at its mildest, with average July highs near 24°C (75°F) at Kew, and business cabins tend to fill first, so book summer early.
Holidays move demand in both directions. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026 and the Boxing Day holiday on Monday 28 December, and Christmas to New Year is busy. In 2027, the UK holidays fall on 26 and 29 March for Easter, 3 and 31 May and 30 August, and Londoners travel around those long weekends. Thanksgiving week is busy from the US side.
Heathrow's own figures show its North American traffic lowest in February, with January and November also quiet, so those months, away from Thanksgiving, usually bring the widest choice and softer fares. Winter in London is dim: Kew averages about 53 hours of sunshine in December against about 222 in July, and January highs are near 9°C (48°F). Watch the clock change: the UK falls back on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November, so for that week London is seven hours ahead, and again from 14 to 28 March 2027.
Entry rules for US citizens, as of October 2026
As of October 2026, US passport holders do not need a visa for UK visits of up to six months for tourism, family or a business trip, but they do need an electronic travel authorization, the ETA, before they fly. Everyone needs their own ETA, including babies and children. Apply through the UK ETA app or online on GOV.UK; there is a fee, and GOV.UK warns that other websites charge more. Decisions usually arrive by email within a day but can take up to three working days, and you must wait for the confirmation before you travel.
An ETA lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers as many trips as you like. It is linked to the passport you applied with, so a new passport needs a new ETA. Connecting through Dublin? The exemption for travel from Ireland applies only to people who live there, so a US visitor still needs an ETA. The border officer makes the final call on entry. Rules change, so check GOV.UK before you fly.
At Heathrow, US citizens with a biometric passport and valid permission such as an ETA can usually use the eGates, which are the quickest way through. Travelers must be 8 or older and at least 120 cm tall, and those aged 8 to 17 must be with an adult; children aged 8 and 9 became eligible on 8 July 2026. The EU's Entry/Exit System and ETIAS do not apply at a UK border, only if you continue into the Schengen area.
Baggage, lounges and the ground in London
Business class on all three airlines includes checked bags, but counts and weight limits depend on the airline and fare type, so check the allowance on your ticket, especially one that combines two airlines. On the way home, Heathrow's upgraded security scanners let you keep liquids in containers of up to 2 liters and laptops in your cabin bag. Rules at a connecting airport may differ.
At SFO, United's Polaris lounge is in International Terminal G, just past security, listed in May 2026 as open 7 am to 11 pm; basic Polaris fares get United Club access instead. Virgin Atlantic has Clubhouse lounges at both SFO and Heathrow, plus the Upper Class Wing for private check-in at Heathrow. British Airways' Terminal 5 lounges sit on the main building's mezzanine, with another premium lounge in satellite 5B, reached by an airside train.
Getting into London is simple. Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3 and about 21 minutes from Terminal 5, every 15 minutes, and contactless cards work at the barriers. The Elizabeth line reaches Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street in under 40 minutes, and the Piccadilly line reaches King's Cross St. Pancras and Piccadilly Circus in under an hour. Taxis wait at every terminal.
Booking tips
- Weekend departures often have more business class seats than midweek flights, when corporate travel peaks.
- On the daytime return, stay up until a normal Pacific bedtime to shake off jet lag faster.
- If the nonstops are full, a one-stop routing through a European hub such as Dublin, Amsterdam or Frankfurt keeps the long leg in a lie-flat seat.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

Diesel Bond was such a perfect agent. My Visa to Pakistan was extremely hard to do by myself. After 4 months going back forth with submission I was totally worn out. I had never used agency before and will never go back to doing myself! Your agency gave me such peace of mind! Will refer you to everyone! Charles Robards
