Guide: New York to London

New York to London is one of the busiest business class routes in the world, with nonstop flights from JFK and Newark to Heathrow throughout the day. The flight takes about 7 hours eastbound and close to 8 hours coming home. Most departures leave in the evening and land in London the next morning, so the night is short and a lie-flat seat matters. A few morning departures from JFK land in London the same evening, which suits travelers who sleep poorly on planes and want to go straight to bed on arrival.

Which airport: JFK or Newark, and almost always Heathrow

In New York the airport follows the airline. At JFK, British Airways and American Airlines share Terminal 8, Delta and Virgin Atlantic share Terminal 4, and JetBlue, which also flies to Heathrow, uses Terminal 5. At Newark, United flies from its own Terminal C and British Airways checks in at Terminal B. Virgin Atlantic does not appear on Newark's airline list, so its New York flights leave from JFK.

Read the full guideHide the full guide

Newark is often the easier ride from New Jersey and the west side of Manhattan, and JFK from Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. In the winter 2026-27 schedule JFK has roughly twice as many daily London departures as Newark, where the choice is United plus a daily British Airways flight.

In London, the nonstops in this guide land at Heathrow. British Airways runs most flights from Terminal 5, with some from Terminal 3; Delta and Virgin Atlantic share Terminal 3, American generally uses it too, and United uses Terminal 2. Check the terminal on your booking.

Nonstop or one stop: five nonstop airlines and plenty of shared flights

There is little reason to connect unless your trip starts or continues elsewhere. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Delta and United all fly nonstop to Heathrow, and JetBlue also flies JFK to Heathrow daily in the winter 2026-27 schedule. Business class goes by different names: Club Suite on British Airways, Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic, Flagship Business on American, Delta One on Delta and Polaris on United. Seats differ by aircraft even within one airline, so ask your agent which version your flight has.

Many flights carry several flight numbers. American and British Airways sell seats on each other's flights, and Delta sells seats on Virgin Atlantic flights under its own flight numbers. The operating airline sets the seat, terminal and lounge, so a Delta ticket on a Virgin Atlantic flight means an Upper Class seat. Read the "operated by" line before comparing two options.

Overnight or daytime: evening departures and morning day flights

Most eastbound flights are overnight. In the winter schedule that starts on 25 October 2026, evening departures from JFK run from about 7 p.m. to 11:15 p.m., plus a British Airways flight just after midnight on most nights, and Newark's from about 7 p.m. to 11:40 p.m. They land at Heathrow between early and late morning, the last close to midday. The flight is only about 7 hours and London is five hours ahead, so after dinner and before breakfast the night is short. A later departure buys a little more sleep but lands later.

Daytime flights solve the sleep problem a different way. In the same winter schedule, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic leave JFK a little after 9 a.m., American at 11:15 a.m. and JetBlue on some days at 9:45 a.m., and United has two morning departures from Newark. They land in London in the evening, roughly between 8 and 11 p.m. You stay awake, work or watch films on board, and go to bed on London time. It costs a working day, but many travelers find the first morning in London much easier.

Westbound flights leave Heathrow between about 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. and land in New York the same day after roughly 7 hours 50 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes, so most are day flights and the last lands close to 11 p.m. One quirk: Britain and the US change clocks on different dates. In 2026 London falls back on 25 October and New York on 1 November, so for that week the gap is four hours, not five; a similar gap opens in March, when the US moves first.

When to go and what moves the fare

Demand on this route follows a clear yearly curve. Heathrow's own traffic figures show North America passengers peaking in July in both 2025 and 2026, with June and August close behind, and falling to their lowest in February, with January and November next. December rises again for the holidays. Business class fares tend to follow that demand: higher when summer travel and year-end holiday trips crowd in, softer in the quiet winter weeks.

Spring and autumn sit between the extremes: in Heathrow's figures, April, May, September and October all ran well above the winter months. Wimbledon, which starts on the last Monday of June or the first Monday of July, lands right on the summer peak.

If your dates are flexible, the stretch from January into early March and most of November usually gives the widest choice of seats. Book summer and the Christmas and New Year weeks early.

Entry rules for US passport holders, as of October 2026

As of October 2026, US citizens do not need a visa for a short visit to the UK but do need an electronic travel authorization (ETA). The UK government said travel without an ETA or other digital permission would be blocked from 25 February 2026, and airlines check for it before boarding. Every traveler needs one, including babies and children. Rules can change, so check GOV.UK again before you fly.

You apply through the official UK ETA app or on GOV.UK with your passport, an email address, a payment method and a photo of your face. There is a fee, and the government warns that other websites may charge more. Most decisions arrive by email within a day, but GOV.UK says it can take up to 3 working days. An ETA lasts 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, for visits of up to 6 months.

The border officer still decides on entry. Visitors may come for tourism and for business activities such as meetings, but may not do paid or unpaid work for a UK company, and the passport should be valid for the whole stay. If you hold British as well as US citizenship, you do not need an ETA, but GOV.UK strongly advises traveling with a valid British passport to avoid problems at boarding.

On arrival, US passport holders with a biometric passport and a valid ETA can normally use the ePassport gates from age 8, with travelers aged 8 to 17 accompanied by an adult, according to GOV.UK guidance updated on 6 October 2026.

Baggage, lounges and the ground in London

Business class tickets on this route include checked bags, but the allowance depends on the airline and fare and is shown on your ticket. Delta, for example, applies a 70 lb limit per piece for Delta One. When one airline sells the ticket and another operates the flight, ask whose baggage rules apply.

In New York, JFK Terminal 4 has a Delta One Lounge, Delta Sky Clubs and a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, and Terminal 8, shared by American and British Airways, has the Greenwich, Soho and Chelsea lounges. At Heathrow, British Airways runs an Arrivals Lounge on the landside of Terminal 5, a useful stop before a morning meeting. BA plans to rebuild it from early 2027; ask whether your ticket includes it.

Heathrow Express reaches London Paddington in 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3, with Terminal 5 about 6 minutes further out, and trains run every 15 minutes; you can tap in with a contactless card or phone. The Elizabeth line takes longer but runs through central London to Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street.

Booking tips

  • Compare JFK and Newark. United flies from Newark, American, Delta and Virgin Atlantic from JFK, and British Airways serves both, so the better schedule can be at either airport.
  • Sleep poorly on planes? Take a morning departure from JFK, land in London that evening and go to bed on local time.
  • Heathrow is the main business class airport. The Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about 15 minutes, and the Elizabeth line runs straight into central London.
  • If your dates are flexible, January, February and November are usually quieter than summer and the holiday weeks.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .
