Guide: New York to Frankfurt
New York to Frankfurt takes about 7.5 to 8 hours eastbound and around 9 hours westbound. Lufthansa flies nonstop from JFK and Newark, United flies from Newark, and Singapore Airlines flies JFK to Frankfurt on its way to Singapore. Most flights leave in the evening and land early the next morning. Frankfurt is Lufthansa's main hub, with short connections to cities across Germany and Europe, and its long-distance train station puts Cologne, Stuttgart and other cities within easy reach without another flight.
Which airport: JFK or Newark, and Frankfurt Terminal 1 or 3
Both New York airports have Frankfurt nonstops, and the airline decides which one you use. At JFK, Lufthansa flies from Terminal 1, Delta and Singapore Airlines from Terminal 4, and Condor from Terminal 7. At Newark, Lufthansa leaves from Terminal B and United from its hub in Terminal C. On the sample date, 18 October 2026, JFK had five passenger departures to Frankfurt and Newark two; from 24 October United adds a second Newark flight four days a week.

Start with the airport that is easier to reach: Newark usually suits New Jersey and the west side of Manhattan, JFK suits Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. JFK is also mid-rebuild, with its New Terminal One now expected in the first quarter of 2027, so trust the terminal printed on your booking.
In Frankfurt, Terminal 1 handles most of this route: Fraport lists Lufthansa in Hall A, United in Hall B, Singapore Airlines in Halls B and C, and Condor in Hall C. Delta now uses Terminal 3, which took over every airline from the old Terminal 2 and is linked to Terminal 1 by the free SkyLine train every 2 to 3 minutes from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Nonstop or one stop: Lufthansa, United and Singapore Airlines, plus Delta and Condor
Lufthansa flies nonstop from JFK and Newark, United from Newark, and Singapore Airlines from JFK on the first leg of its flight on to Singapore. Delta and Condor, a German leisure airline, also fly JFK to Frankfurt, daily for most of summer 2026 and three days a week in the winter schedules from late October. Business class goes by different names: Allegris is Lufthansa's newest cabin, United sells Polaris, Delta sells Delta One, and Singapore Airlines calls it Business Class.
On Lufthansa, the seat depends on the aircraft. Allegris flies on newer Boeing 787s and Airbus A350s, and Lufthansa added JFK to its Allegris 787 routes from June 2026 on select frequencies, but on the sample date its New York flights were scheduled on Airbus A340s and a Boeing 747-8, a type due for an Allegris retrofit. From 25 October, schedule data lists a Boeing 787-9 on the late JFK flight. Lufthansa flags Allegris flights at booking and charges to reserve many Allegris business seats, so ask your agent which aircraft and seat you will get.
Lufthansa and United sell seats on each other's flights, so check the "operated by" line: the operating airline sets the seat, terminal and lounge. A connection through another European hub rarely makes sense unless the nonstops are full. If Frankfurt is only a gateway, Lufthansa Express Rail trains to Cologne, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart and Dortmund can replace a connecting flight.
Overnight or daytime: evening flights east, day flights west
Neither New York airport had a morning departure to Frankfurt on the sample date, so the eastbound trip is an overnight one. JFK departures ran from Lufthansa at 3:40 p.m. to Lufthansa again at 9:50 p.m., with Condor, Delta and Singapore Airlines in between. Newark had Lufthansa at 6 p.m. and United at 7:30 p.m. Scheduled flight times were about 7 hours 35 minutes to 8 hours. The winter timetable keeps that shape, landing from about 5:15 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
The departure time decides the night. Frankfurt is six hours ahead for most of the year, so the 3:40 p.m. Lufthansa flight lands at 5:25 a.m., hours before most hotel rooms are ready, while the 9:50 p.m. flight lands at 11:45 a.m. and the rest arrive in between. With dinner after takeoff and breakfast before landing, a later departure usually leaves more time to sleep.
Westbound, every nonstop is a day flight, leaving between 8:35 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and landing in New York the same day after roughly 8 hours 25 minutes to 9 hours. Germany ends summer time on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November, so for that week the gap is five hours; a similar gap opens in March, when the US changes first.
When to go and what moves the fare
Frankfurt Airport's monthly figures show a clear curve. In 2025 and 2026, August was the busiest month with July close behind, and February the quietest, then January. October 2025 matched September before traffic dropped sharply in November and December. These are whole-airport numbers, but transatlantic business class demand tends to follow the same peak, and fares usually rise and fall with it.
Trade fairs at Messe Frankfurt can tighten flights and hotels in quiet weeks: the Ambiente consumer goods fair runs from 29 January to 2 February 2027 and the Frankfurter Buchmesse book fair from 6 to 10 October 2027. The Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026.
With flexible dates, February, early March and most of November usually give the widest choice of seats outside fair weeks. Book summer, early October and the Christmas and New Year weeks well ahead.
Entry rules for US passport holders, as of October 2026
As of October 2026, US citizens need no visa for a short visit. Germany's Federal Foreign Office lists the United States as visa-exempt for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, a limit that covers the whole Schengen area, so count days in other Schengen countries too. Rules can change; check before you fly.
Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least three months after you plan to leave, according to the EU's Your Europe portal (last checked 19 August 2026). Renew first if yours is close to either limit.
Passport control now runs the EU's Entry/Exit System. It started in stages on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It records your passport details, fingerprints and a facial image and replaces passport stamps, so the first registration may add time.
ETIAS, the EU travel authorization planned for visa-free visitors, was not running when this guide was checked: the official ETIAS site says it collects no applications and that the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. Be wary of any site selling one now.
Baggage, lounges and the ground in Frankfurt
Business class fares here normally include checked bags, but the allowance depends on the fare and the operating airline. Singapore Airlines, for example, lists two pieces of up to 32 kg each in business class on US flights and applies the operating airline's policy on codeshares.
JFK Terminal 4, used by Delta and Singapore Airlines, has a Delta One Lounge among several others. At Newark, United's Polaris lounge is in Terminal C between gates C102 and C120, but One Mile at a Time reports that basic Polaris fares get only United Club access, so ask whether yours includes it.
In Frankfurt, S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run a few minutes into the city from the regional station under Terminal 1. ICE and IC trains leave from the long-distance station, about a five-minute walk from Terminal 1. Arriving in Terminal 3 on Delta, take the SkyLine to Terminal 1 first, about 10 to 15 minutes.
Lufthansa Express Rail puts train and flight on one ticket. Frankfurt Airport says its AiRail Terminal is no longer available from 26 October, so rail passengers check bags at the departure hall counters and collect them at the normal baggage claim.
Booking tips
- Singapore Airlines sells business class on its JFK to Frankfurt leg on its own, which adds a different seat and service to the usual transatlantic choices.
- Frankfurt Airport has a long-distance rail station, so Cologne, Stuttgart and other German cities are often faster by train than by connecting flight.
- Lufthansa and United are joint-venture partners, so their JFK and Newark flights can be mixed on one ticket.

Den Dunn worked with me to get the best price He planned our return trip from Turkeye with an airline that I had no knowledge about. He assured me that Turkish air was great, which they were. He planned our change of planes in Houston, and it was one of the smoothest transitions I have ever had. There was no long lay over. I will definitely be giving him a call the nest time we travel .

Diesel Bond was such a perfect agent. My Visa to Pakistan was extremely hard to do by myself. After 4 months going back forth with submission I was totally worn out. I had never used agency before and will never go back to doing myself! Your agency gave me such peace of mind! Will refer you to everyone! Charles Robards
